Classical Unlocked is a live-music platform and promoter founded by Thea Paraskevaides.[1] The platform presents concerts, festival showcases and industry discussions in mainstream and independent venues, featuring artists who combine classical techniques and instruments with contemporary musical styles.[2]
Activities
[edit]Classical Unlocked has presented annual showcases at South by Southwest (SXSW) in Austin since 2023. Classical Music described its first programme, which combined an industry panel with a night-long international showcase featuring pianist Kyle P. Walker, as the festival’s inaugural classical showcase.[3] Subsequent programmes have featured artists including Caroline Shaw, Tiffany Poon, Ayanna Witter-Johnson and Tokio Myers.[4]
Classical Unlocked expanded its festival programming to SXSW London, presenting performances at Shoreditch Town Hall as part of the festival’s contemporary classical programme. Artists featured at its 2025 showcase included Jess Gillam and Gabriel Prokofiev.[5]
In 2026 the platform returned to SXSW Austin for a fourth consecutive year with a live screening of Eric Whitacre’s multimedia project Deep Field in partnership with UK House and the Department for Business and Trade. Combining Whitacre’s score with imagery from NASA missions, the presentation was followed by a discussion involving former NASA astronaut John M. Grunsfeld and astrophysicist Kimberly Arcand.[6]
Beyond its industy showcases, Classical Unlocked promotes concerts in grassroots and independent venues - an approach Paraskevaides has linked to classical music’s historic lack of a grassroots performance circuit.[7]
At Beyond The Music in Manchester in 2024, Classical Unlocked and PRS for Music curated a panel examining classical music’s relationship with popular culture, contemporary media and new audiences; participants included BBC Radio 3 and BBC Proms controller Sam Jackson.[8] The platform has also participated in related discussions at the International Live Music Conference.[9]
