Cinemata (cinemata.org) is an open-source video platform for social issue and environmental films from the Asia-Pacific region. It is developed and operated by EngageMedia, a nonprofit media and technology organisation. Launched in 2021, the platform hosts more than 7,300 films from over 30 countries as of September 2026.[1] Cinemata runs on CinemataCMS, an open-source video content management system maintained by EngageMedia's developer team under the GNU General Public License version 3.
History
[edit]Cinemata's origins trace to Plumi, an open-source video-sharing content management system EngageMedia developed with Unweb.me in 2006. Plumi, built on the Plone content management framework, hosted advocacy videos on subjects including Indigenous Peoples rights, labour and land rights, and anti-globalization movements across the Asia Pacific for over a decade.[2]
In the late 2010s, EngageMedia began moving its video archive to a new, dedicated infrastructure that would eventually be called Cinemata. Between 2019 and 2021, working with developer Markos Gogoulos and EngageMedia co-founder Anna Helme, EngageMedia migrated its video content to MediaCMS, an open-source video platform, and added advocacy features to the platform.[3] Cinemata launched publicly in 2021.[4]
The platform's name combines "cine", meaning motion picture, with "mata", the word for "eye" in Malay, Indonesian, Filipino, and related regional languages.[1]
In 2024, Cinemata's partnership with the Cultural Center of the Philippines was documented in the book Letters from the Future: 35 Years of the Gawad Alternatibo sa Pelikula at Video, edited by Adjani Arumpac, which mentioned Cinemata's role in Philippine alternative cinema.[5]
In July 2025, EngageMedia released CinemataCMS 2.0, an updated version of the platform's software now independently maintained by in-house developers in South and Southeast Asia.[6] The documentary industry publication Modern Times Review wrote about the relaunch the following month, characterizing it as the "movement infrastructure" for advocacy documentary filmmaking in the Asia-Pacific.[7]
In a 2026 report to the United Nations Human Rights Council, Special Rapporteur on the promotion and protection of the right to freedom of opinion and expression Irene Khan cited Cinemata as one of three examples, alongside Mastodon and MyData Global, of platforms operating outside dominant commercial information infrastructure.[8]
Platform and technology
[edit]CinemataCMS is released under the GNU General Public License version 3 and built with Django, PostgreSQL, Redis, and React. Other organisations can self-host their own instance of the software.[6]
Between December 2024 and April 2025, the Open Technology Fund's Security Lab, working with the security firm Assured, conducted a security audit of the Cinemata platform.[9] Auditors identified 29 vulnerabilities, including one rated critical and five rated high risk.[10] EngageMedia stated that all findings were remediated and verified in follow-up testing.[9]
Content
[edit]The platform's curators select and feature films addressing subjects including climate change, human rights, gender, and freedom of expression.[1] Cinemata's films are organised partly through a Community Curators programme, in which curators from across the region develop themed selections and host screenings with local partners.[11] In the Philippines, Cinemata has served as the streaming platform for the Cultural Center of the Philippines' Gawad Alternatibo competition.[5]
