Chrono24 is an online marketplace for luxury watches operated by Chrono24 GmbH. According to the company, around 560,000[4] new and pre-owned luxury watches are offered on the platform by private and professional sellers. The platform is available in more than 20 languages[5] and is used in more than 120 countries.[6] Several media outlets have described it as the largest online marketplace for luxury watches.[7][8][9]

History

[edit]

The company was founded in 2003 by Andrej Maric and Axess New Media GmbH.[10] Tim Stracke, Dirk Schwartz, and Michael Krkoska acquired the company in 2010 for an undisclosed amount in the millions of euros and subsequently restructured it.[11] From 2014, the company expanded internationally.[11] The company completed three funding rounds between 2015 and 2021. Investors include General Atlantic, the venture capital arm of Bernard Arnault's family office, Insight Partners, and Sprints Capital.[12] Following a funding round in August 2021, the company was valued at more than US$1 billion, making it a unicorn.[13] In 2023, the soccer player Cristiano Ronaldo acquired a stake;[14][15] racing driver Charles Leclerc followed in 2024.[16][17] At the beginning of 2024, former Zalando manager Carsten Keller took over as CEO. At the same time, former CEOs Holger Felgner and Tim Stracke joined the company's advisory board.[18][5] In January 2025, the company laid off approximately 110 of its 460 employees, the daily newspaper “Badisches Tagblatt” speculated that the cause was a market environment for luxury goods that had become more challenging.[19] Keller left in September 2025 following reported strategic disagreements with the board. The departure was not publicly disclosed at the time.[20] Chief Growth Officer José Gaztelu, who joined in July 2025 and subsequently served as interim head, was appointed Chief Executive Officer in May 2026.[2]

Business model and structure of the group

[edit]

The group's main business is the operation of an online marketplace for luxury watches. According to the company, around 560,000[4] are listed on the platform at any one time, in over 20 languages.[5] In 2025, around 3,000 professional dealers[20] and 45,000 private sellers[20] offered watches on the platform.[5] Chrono24 is responsible for the technological infrastructure, payment infrastructure, and customer service.[21] Relevant portions of the revenue result from commissions for sales transactions.[22] Commercial sellers also pay listing fees.[23]

MPN Marketplace Networks GmbH is the holding company of the group, which consists of nine companies (as of the end of 2024).[24] The Group's headquarters are located in Karlsruhe, Germany.[25] In addition, the company has six other locations.[1]

Market and position

[edit]

In the luxury watch market, brick-and-mortar retailers compete with specialized online sellers. Some dealers specialize in either pre-owned or new watches.[26] Chrono24 lists both new and pre-owned watches. Direct competitors include general online marketplaces such as eBay[27] and specialist watch resellers such as WatchBox and Chronext.[28] Auction houses are also among the competitors in the luxury watch market.[29][30] Several media outlets have described Chrono24 as the largest online marketplace for luxury watches.[7][8][9]

Services

[edit]

The platform can be accessed via the Chrono24 website or the mobile app.[31] In 2019, Chrono24 introduced a "Watch Scanner", an image-recognition feature intended to identify a watch's brand and model.[32] The platform also offers a tool for recording watch collections, which displays its market value.[33][34] In 2023, the company launched ChronoPulse, a price index for pre-owned watches covering more than 140 models from 14 brands; according to the company, it is based on transaction prices rather than asking prices.[35] These prices are not based on bid prices but on market prices, i.e., actual sales.[36] The tool tracks more than 140 models across 14 major brands.[37] In April 2024, the company introduced "Certified", a program for authenticating pre-owned watches sold on the platform.[38] Payments are processed through an escrow service; sellers are paid only after the buyer has confirmed receipt of the watch.[39]
