Chinmayee Sumeet (née Chinmayee Surve) is an Indian actress and theatre artist known for her work in Marathi theatre, television, and films. Active since the early 1990s, she has appeared in Marathi and Hindi-language productions. She is also known for her advocacy of Marathi-medium education and Marathi language preservation.
Early life and education
[edit]Chinmayee Sumeet (née Chinmayee Surve) grew up in Aurangabad, Maharashtra. Her father, Ravindra Surve, a retired Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer with literary interests, and her mother, a professor of psychology, played an important role in shaping her early exposure to literature and the arts.[1]
In interviews, Chinmayee has credited her parents with encouraging reading and literary pursuits from an early age. She has spoken about growing up in an intellectually stimulating environment, with books, literature, and cultural discussions influencing her interest in the arts.[1] She pursued her higher education at Sir Parashurambhau (S. P.) College, Pune, where she participated in theatre activities including the Purushottam Karandak intercollegiate theatre competition.
Career

[edit]Chinmayee began her professional acting career in Marathi theatre in the early 1990s. Her early theatre work included productions such as Jwalamukhi, Phakta Ekach Karan, and Bombay Meri Jaan.[2]
While working on the Marathi play Jwalamukhi, Chinmayee met actor Sumeet Raghvan. The two later married in 1996.[2]
In 2002, Chinmayee portrayed Aruna Shanbaug in the Marathi play Katha Arunachi, directed by Vinay Apte and based on Shanbaug's life.[3][4]
Her later theatre appearances include Pahava Ekda Karun, Itha Havaay Kunala Prem, Astitva (2023), and Hi Dosti Tutaychi Naay (2026).[5][6]
In 2026, Chinmayee and Sumeet Raghvan founded Natyaleela Theatres, a Marathi theatre production company. Its inaugural production, Hi Dosti Tutaychi Naay, was launched under the company's banner and continues to be staged.[7]
Television and film
[edit]Alongside theatre, Chinmayee has appeared in Marathi and Hindi television serials and films.
Her television work includes De Dhamal, Laagi Tujhse Lagan, Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar – Mahamanvachi Gauravgatha, Jeev Zala Yedapisa, and Slum Golf.[8]
Her film appearances include Checkmate (2008), Hridaynath (2012), Por Bazaar (2014), Muramba (2017), Faster Fene (2017), Smile Please (2019), Malaal (2019), and Phullwanti (2024).
For her performance in Muramba, Sumeet won the Filmfare Award Marathi for Best Actor in a Supporting Role (Female) in 2018.[9]
Public advocacy
[edit]Beyond acting, Chinmayee has been associated with initiatives promoting Marathi-medium education and the Marathi language.
She and Sumeet Raghvan have spoken publicly about the importance of mother-tongue education and their decision to educate their children in Marathi-medium schools.[10]
Chinmayee has worked with initiatives supporting Marathi-medium schools and has served as a Goodwill Ambassador for Marathi schools (मराठी शाळांच्या सदिच्छादूत).[11][12]
Personal life
[edit]Chinmayee married actor Sumeet Raghvan in 1996. The couple first met while working together in the Marathi play Jwalamukhi.[1]
They have two children, a son named Neerad and a daughter named Deeya.[13]
