Camponotus parius is a species of ant in the genus Camponotus and family Formicidae. It was described by Carlo Emery in 1889.[1]
Taxonomy
[edit]Camponotus parius was described by Carlo Emery in 1889.[1]
The original specimens were collected by Leonardo Fea in Myanmar between 1885 and 1887. The original type localities were Bhamo and Rangoon, now Yangon.[1]
The type material consists of syntype minor workers and is deposited in the Museo Civico di Storia Naturale di Genova.[1]
The species has historically been associated with Camponotus rufoglaucus in some taxonomic treatments. It is currently treated as a separate species.[2]
Distribution
[edit]Camponotus parius has been recorded in several parts of Asia, including Bangladesh, China, India, Laos, Myanmar, Singapore, Sri Lanka and Vietnam.[1][2]
In India, the species has been recorded from the Andaman and Nicobar Islands and several mainland states. These records include Karnataka, Kerala, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Uttarakhand and West Bengal.[3]
The species is also recorded in Singapore.[4]
Habitat
[edit]Specimens of Camponotus parius have been collected in botanical gardens, primary rainforest, rainforest edges and roadside vegetation.[1]
Recorded specimens range from approximately 10 to 1066 metres above sea level.[1]
Some specimens have been recorded as ground foragers. One collection record describes specimens associated with a clay mud mound at the base of a tree beside a lake.[1]
Biology
[edit]Information about the biology of Camponotus parius is limited compared with some other species of Camponotus.
The species has been recorded in association with the aphid Aphis gossypii.[2]
It has also been reported as prey of the tiger beetle Cicindela duponti in the Western Ghats of India.[2]
Identification
[edit]Camponotus parius belongs to the subfamily Formicinae of the family Formicidae.
The species has been included in taxonomic treatments and identification keys for Asian Camponotus ants.[2]
Because of its taxonomic history involving Camponotus rufoglaucus, identification should be based on morphological characters used in taxonomic treatments rather than coloration alone.[2]
Cytogenetics
[edit]A chromosome number of 2n = 40 has been reported for Camponotus parius from India.[2]
