Caitlin Walker is an American-English [[facilitator]], author and organisational development consultant known for developing Systemic Modelling and the #DramaFree approach. Her work applies principles derived from Clean Language and Symbolic Modelling to areas including conflict resolution, organisational development, culture change, mediation, education and leadership development.
Walker is a director of Clean Learning and has developed approaches that apply Clean Language-based methods in groups, organisations and community settings. Her work builds on the influence of David J. Grove, the originator of Clean Language, extending metaphor-based modelling approaches into systemic and organisational contexts.
Early life and education
[edit]Walker studied linguistics at the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS), University of London. Following her undergraduate studies, she undertook postgraduate research into strategies for lexical access in machine language recognition, including fieldwork in Ghana.
During her time at SOAS, Walker became interested in learning processes and communication. She developed intermediary teaching sessions that translated academic material into different learning styles to support students with varied approaches to learning.
Walker later completed doctoral research at Liverpool John Moores University. In 2021, she was awarded a PhD for her thesis on the use of Clean Language interviewing in curriculum design in higher education. The research examined how curriculum design could be modelled through Clean Language interviewing.
Career
[edit]Walker was introduced to Clean Language through the work of David J. Grove in 1996. She subsequently developed applications of Clean Language and modelling techniques for education, community projects and organisational development.
In the late 1990s, Walker worked with young people in community education settings. She established literacy clubs in King's Cross, London, and later worked as an education tutor with the Dalston Youth Project, a Home Office-supported initiative designed to provide accelerated learning opportunities for young people at risk of exclusion from mainstream education.
Walker applied modelling-based learning workshops within these programmes, using language and learning approaches to support young people's development. The project received a Crime Prevention and Community Safety award in 1999.
In 1999, Walker developed the Metaphors@Work process, applying metaphor-based modelling approaches to workplace learning and management development. Elements of this work have been incorporated into management education programmes, including material associated with the Open University MBA programme.
Systemic Modelling
[edit]Systemic Modelling is an approach developed by Walker that extends principles from Clean Language and Symbolic Modelling into group and organisational contexts.
The approach focuses on helping individuals and groups explore patterns of communication, behaviour and relationships through structured dialogue, reflection and modelling. It has been applied in areas including leadership development, diversity, mediation, organisational culture change and the development of learning organisations.
Walker also developed the #DramaFree approach, which applies principles from Systemic Modelling to communication, collaboration and conflict management.
