From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Bury Alexandra Football Club were a former football club based in Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk, England playing in the West Suffolk League and the Ipswich and District Leagues. They ran from 1890 to 1908 when they merged with Bury Town F.C.

History

[edit]

The club was founded in 1890 with members splitting from Bury Town[1]

An announcement in the newspaper Bury Free Press 27 September 1890 stated “A football club in connection with the Great Eastern Railway Station and district has just been started under the name of Bury Alexandra Football Club. The officers are as follows:- Mr. W. Allen, captain; Mr. C. E. Clarke, deputy captain; Mr. W. E. Mountain, chairman of committee and hon. Secretary; and Mr. Farrants, jun., assistant hon. Secretary”[2]

In the first season (1890-91) they played in the Suffolk Junior Cup, the cup's inaugural year[3], where they were knocked out in the first round, losing 2-0 to Chilton Hill House.[4] Two seasons later they reached the Junior Cup final, losing to Landguard Fort 2-0[5].

At the first annual meeting held on 20 August 1891 at the Saracen’s Head the club colours of chocolate and light blue shirt were chosen in place of a white shirt with red sash.[6] In the 1897/98 and 1899/1900 seasons their colours were black with a red sash.

They were founder members of the West Suffolk Football League in 1894 along with Bury Town, Clare, Glemsford, Haverhill Town, Haverhill Rovers, Lavenham, Long Melford and Sudbury[7] and were winners of the West Suffolk League Cup in that inaugural season.[8]

On Easter Monday, 20 April 1908 they reached the final of the Suffolk Senior Cup, losing to Ipswich Town 3-0.[9]

As early as 1892 there were discussions about whether Bury Alexandra and Bury Town should merge. Bury Town were seen as a “gentlemen’s” club whereas Alexandra were a working men’s club.[10] In 1893 members of Bury Alexandra attended the Bury Town Annual Meeting and said that if the subscriptions were reduced from 5s to 2/6d then members from Alexandra would return[11]. However it wasn’t until a meeting at the Three Kings in Bury St Edmunds on Friday 14 August 1908 that the two clubs agreed to combine under the name “Bury United Football Club”[12]

Grounds

[edit]

Initially the team played at a ground near Northgate Railway Station[13], but from 1893 onwards at Ram Meadow, behind the Unicorn Inn, Eastgate Street[14][15]. Ram Meadow is where Bury Town F.C. currently play.
