Brokenchord is the musical project of Lithuanian musician and producer Ernestas Kausylas (Lithuanian: Ernestas Kaušylas), from Utena, Lithuania. Active since 2007, Brokenchord blends electronic music, post-punk, krautrock, dub, and experimental elements. The project has released music on Black Acre Records and South of North Records, and gained early recognition through an official Radiohead remix commissioned by Thom Yorke.[1][2]
Early life and career
[edit]Kausylas grew up in Utena, a small industrial town in northeastern Lithuania.[1][3] He began making music around 2007, initially influenced by hip hop producers such as J Dilla and Flying Lotus.[2]
In 2010, his early recordings caught the attention of Mary Anne Hobbs, who played his music on BBC Radio 1's Experimental Show.[3][4] This led to a signing with Bristol-based Black Acre Records, where he released a 7-inch single and an EP.[1]
Shortly after, Thom Yorke featured Brokenchord's track "Lowe" in his personal top-ten chart on Radiohead's Dead Air Space blog, leading to a commission for an official remix of "Give Up the Ghost" from The King of Limbs (2011).[2][4] The remix appeared on TKOL RMX 1234567 alongside contributions from Jamie xx, Four Tet, and others. Slant Magazine singled out Brokenchord's remix as "wonderfully chunky, blending anxious synths with a monstrous, slowed-down percussion assault."[5]
Kausylas subsequently studied at the Institute of Sonology in The Hague[2][6] and toured Eastern Europe as support for Bonobo's North Borders Tour.[7]
He also contributed two remixes to The Twilight Sad's remix album No One Can Ever Know: The Remixes (2012). The Twilight Sad's James Graham noted he first heard of Brokenchord through Radiohead.[8][9]
Music
[edit]Brokenchord's early work was characterised by dubstep-influenced electronics and sample-based production. Mixmag described his sound as "dubby, echo-laden music that is at once orchestral and highly simplistic."[3] Clash highlighted his "dark, dubby excursions" and "dubbed out electronics with a jazz-like flexibility."[10]
His 2017 debut album Endless Transmission, released on Black Acre Records, marked a shift toward more cinematic, ambient-leaning compositions. Kausylas described the album as "a movie painted with sound."[1] Self-Titled Magazine premiered the music video for "Parabola," filmed at the decommissioned Ignalina Nuclear Power Plant in Lithuania.[11]
Bandcamp Daily identified Brokenchord as "one of the more internationally known names" in Lithuanian experimental electronic music.[12] Telekom Electronic Beats similarly noted that Brokenchord's "beats stomp through fog or molasses toward an eternity of introspection."[13]
Over time, Brokenchord's sound has evolved to incorporate electric guitar, bass, and live drums, moving further into post-punk and noise territory.[2] In 2022, the project began performing as a three-piece live band, a shift covered by Lithuanian media as a significant evolution.[14] The 2024 album Stone Island Tracks, released on South of North Records, was described as "a careless, psychotic journey through a night city" with lo-fi psychedelic and krautrock aesthetics.[15]
Radio
[edit]Brokenchord hosts a resident radio show on LYL Radio (Lyon/Paris). He has also appeared on BBC Radio 1 (Mary Anne Hobbs), The Lot Radio (New York City), and Radio Vilnius.[2][4]
