Broken Bones Distillery is a Slovenian craft distillery based in the Vič district of Ljubljana, Slovenia. Founded in 2012[1], it produces gin, whisky, and other spirits[2], and is noted as the country's first producers of single malt whisky.[3]
History
[edit]The distillery was founded by Borut Osojnik, Boštjan Marušič, and Polona Preskar.[4] Osojnik and Marušič began developing a Slovenian single malt whisky in 2012[5], aiming to create a product that in quality could compete with the best single malt whisky brands.[6] The family owned team is completed by Preskar, providing initiative to expand into gin which led to start of commercial production in 2018. She is contributing her expertise in sales and marketing.[7]
The company's name originated in July 2016, when Marušič and Osojnik each [8]sustained injuries: a broken leg and a broken nose, respectively while filling the distillery's first whisky barrels.[9][10]
In 2022 the distillery became the only non British distillery to ever become The Distllery of the Year at The Gin Guide Awards.[11]
Broken Bones opened a distillery in the Vič district of Ljubljana in 2019.[12][13] Whisky maturation warehouse is in a separate location.[14]
In 2024 the distillery installed new 1000 L whisky still.[15]
Distillery is also active in promoting local whisky scene - hosting tastings by Whisky Club Slovenia each month.[16]
Products
[edit]Broken Bones produces a range of spirits[17], including:
Gin — including a London Dry gin[18][19] flavoured with juniper, rosehip, and other botanicals sourced from Slovenia's Karst region[20], Navy Strength gin[21], as well an Old Tom variant. Their gins have gained recognition at many independent international competitions including World's Best Old Tom Gin at World Gin Awards 2021[22] and 2022[23], gin master at The Gin Masters 2024, The Best of the Best at Tokyo Whisky and Spirits Competition 2026.[24]
Whisky — including peated and unpeated[25] single malt whiskies and blended whisky[26], aged in a combination of Slovenian and American oak barrels.[27] Jim Murray first included their whiskies in 2022 edition of The Whisky Bible[28] and selected the peated cask strength whisky as best continental European whisky in the 2025-2026 edition of The Whisky Bible.[29]. Serge Valentin very favourably reviewed several of their whiskies on his blog Whiskfun.com.[30]
Other spirits, including vodka, wine brandy, and rum, some produced in collaboration with other Slovenian producers.[31]
