Draft:Bongo Zozo

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Bongo Zozo is the online name of Nick Reynolds, a British social media personality and entrepreneur known for creating Swahili-language content about Tanzania. He has been involved in tourism promotion and Tanzanian sport, and has developed a following particularly among Tanzanian audiences.[1]

Early life and Tanzania

[edit]

Reynolds was born in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe, and grew up in England.[2] He moved to Tanzania as a young adult and lived in the country for approximately 18 years.[3]

During his years in Tanzania, Reynolds became fluent in Swahili. He married a Tanzanian woman and had two children.[3] He subsequently returned to live in the United Kingdom while continuing to travel regularly to Tanzania.[4]

Media career

[edit]

Reynolds began creating online video content under the name Bongo Zozo in 2019.[1] His content is predominantly in Swahili and has focused on travel, Tanzanian culture, sport and humour.[3]

He gained wider attention during the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt, where he travelled in support of the Tanzania national football team. An interview with Reynolds while he was supporting Tanzania at the tournament went viral in Tanzania.[1]

The phrase "fujo zisizoumiza", meaning approximately "harmless chaos" or "harmless fun", became associated with his online persona after the 2019 tournament.[1][4]

His social-media audience subsequently expanded, with his content attracting a predominantly Tanzanian following.[3]

Tourism promotion

[edit]

In 2020, Reynolds was appointed a voluntary tourism ambassador for Tanzania by then Minister for Natural Resources and Tourism Hamisi Kigwangalla.[3][5]

The role involved promoting Tanzania's tourist attractions, including through his social-media content and travels.[5] In 2023, the Tanzania Tourist Board used Reynolds in a campaign promoting attractions in Tanzania's Southern Highlands.[6]

Support for Tanzanian sport

[edit]

Reynolds has been involved in promoting Tanzanian sport, particularly football. His support for the Tanzania national football team was a prominent part of his early public profile, including travelling to the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt.[4]

At the Tanzania Football Federation's 2020–21 awards, Reynolds received the award for best promoter (Muhamasishaji Bora).[7] The Britain Tanzania Society describes the honour as the TFF's 2021 "Influencer of the Year" award.[8]

In January 2024, Tanzania's Minister for Culture, Arts and Sports, Damas Ndumbaro, appointed Reynolds to a special committee established to encourage public support for Tanzanian national teams competing in international tournaments.[9]

Resignation as tourism ambassador

[edit]

In November 2025, following unrest and deaths associated with protests after Tanzania's October 2025 general election, Reynolds announced his resignation as a tourism ambassador.[10]

In his resignation statement, Reynolds cited the breakdown of peace and loss of humanity in Tanzania and said that he could no longer continue in the role.[10]
