Boekenberg Castle is a castle in the Boekenberg Park in Antwerp, Belgium.
History
[edit]The estates origin dates back to the mid-16th century. Between 1751 to 1755 it was redeveloped in rococo designs of Jan Pieter Van Baurscheit de Jonge. By the end of the 18th century a romantic park which included a Chinese pagoda was added to the estate. Catharina Regina Maria della Faillle, wife of Constant-Charles-Marie of Havre bought the estate in 1838. On Catharina's behalf the park was reworked in 1859 by Friedrich Eduard Keilig.[1]
In 1911 the property was given to the real estate company F by its last private owner Paul Cogels. 1914 the municipality of Antwerp bought the middle part of estate, being approximately 10 hectares. Until 1928 the park was closed to the public. The former mirror pond was transformed into an outdoor swimming pool in 1934. The castle switched hands various times afterwards until it became property of the OCNW in 1956.[1]
Until 2018 the estate was used as a center for special youth care until the Zorgbedrijf Antwerpen (formerly OCNW) put it up for sell.[2]
