Bobby Cussens is the pen name of Julie A. Wilson, a British crime writer, researcher and entrepreneur.[1][2] She is the author of the Shotley Bridge crime novels, which are set in County Durham and feature Detective Constable Heather Hudson.[3][4]

Early life

[edit]

Wilson was born in Farnborough and grew up in Nether Edge, Sheffield, where she attended Abbeydale Middle School and Abbeydale Grange Comprehensive.[4][5] She later lived in Eastbourne before moving to North East England, and lives in Shotley Bridge, County Durham.[5][2]

Academic and business career

[edit]

Under her legal name, Julie Wilson, she published research on relational leadership, workplace trust and leader–member relationships, including work with the management scholar Ann L. Cunliffe.[6][7][8]

In 2020, Wilson co-founded Settld, a Sunderland-based bereavement-notification service, with her daughter Vicky Wilson.[4][9][10][11] The service launched publicly in 2021.[12] Settld placed 25th in the 2024 Startups 100 and had raised £900,000 by that year.[9] It was acquired by The Estate Registry, part of Phillips & Cohen Associates, in June 2024.[11][13]

Writing career

[edit]

Writing as Bobby Cussens, Wilson published her debut crime novel, Shotley Bridge Murders, in November 2025.[3][14] In an interview with BBC Radio Tees, reported by regional newspapers, she said the story began as a way to entertain friends in Shotley Bridge before developing into a novel.[5][4]

The novel is set in and around Shotley Bridge, using real locations including Wood Street, Muggleswick and Derwent Reservoir, and introduces Detective Constable Heather Hudson.[2][3] A companion puzzle book, Shotley Bridge Puzzles, followed in December 2025.[4] A sequel, Shotley Bridge Revenge, was published in September 2026 as the second book in a planned five-book series.[15]
