Bernd Wehner (* 1943) is a German contemporary sculptor and artist who's work has been characterised by the use of unconventional materials such as lead, cardboard, and bitumen. He is based in Freiburg im Breisgau in Southern Germany.

Life and career

[edit]

Bernd Wehner was born in Silesia, Germany (now Poland) in 1943. He obtained a degree in graphic design in 1963 and studied contemporary art from 1963 to 1967 at the Werkkunstschule Augsburg. After work as a stage design assistant in Munich, Venice, and Bologna, he graduated under Peter Dreher from the State Academy of Fine Arts Karlsruhe in 1973. He lives and works in Freiburg im Breisgau.[1]

Work

Wehner’s work frequently incorporates materials such as lead, cardboard, and bitumen. Through these materials, his compositions manipulate the balance between fragility and weight.[2] Wehner's work engages with themes of perception, instability, and the fragility of human constructs.[3][4] In an exhibition essay, Wilfried Post describes him as a “child of war” and associates these themes with the artist's early childhood experience of forced displacement during World War II and growing up in post-war Germany.[5] Since the late 1960s, Wehner has exhibited his work in Germany, Switzerland, and France. His work has been presented in institutional contexts, including exhibitions at the State Gallery Stuttgart [6] and the German Bundestag. [7] [8]

Public collections

[edit]

Works by the artist are held in public collections, including state collections in Baden-Württemberg[9] and the Artothek of the German Bundestag.[10]
