Bernard James is an American jewelry designer based in Greenpoint, Brooklyn, New York, and the founder of his eponymous fine jewelry label.[1][2][3] His designs feature gold metalwork and draw on natural forms.[1][2]
Early life and education
[edit]James grew up in the Crown Heights neighborhood of Brooklyn in an entrepreneurial family and received his first piece of jewelry, a gold signet ring, as an infant.[1][2] He attended the Collegiate School and studied business at Carnegie Mellon University before transferring to New York University.[1][3] He began making jewelry casually for friends and produced his early pieces with a craftsman in New York City's Diamond District, and gained experience in the luxury fashion industry, including at Salvatore Ferragamo.[1][3]
Career
[edit]James founded his fine jewelry label.[4][1][2] His metal-forward designs include the nature-inspired Flora and Fungi collections, which explore contrasts found in nature.[1][2] In 2023, he opened a combined retail space and studio in Greenpoint, Brooklyn.[5] His jewelry has been stocked at Dover Street Market, and in 2024 he created a flora-inspired diamond collection marking the retailer's tenth year in New York.[2] James has presented his collections at New York Fashion Week.[6]
Recognition
[edit]In 2023, James won Accessories Designer of the Year at the Essence Best in Black Fashion Awards,[7] and was selected for the Natural Diamond Council's Emerging Designers Diamond Initiative.[1] In 2025, he was one of ten finalists for the CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund, announced in June 2025,[8] and a nominee for American Emerging Designer of the Year at the CFDA Fashion Awards, held on November 3, 2025.[9] He was also a Fashion Trust U.S. jewelry finalist.[10]
