Bende Bendsen (born on December 10, 1787, in Risum; died on December 18, 1875, in Ærøskøbing) was a North Frisian hypnotiseur, teacher, poet, and linguist.
Bendsen worked as a private tutor on the island of Ærø and treated the sick as a “magnetizer,” that is, through the laying on of hands. He turned his attention to the Frisian language and wrote, among other things, poems in Frisian. Among his works is the grammar "Die nordfriesische Sprache nach der Moringer Mundart" (“The North Frisian Language According to the Mooring Dialect”). Bendsen completed it in 1824, but it was not published until 1860 by the Dutch linguist Matthias de Vries in Leiden, following a recommendation by Jacob Grimm. Bendsen also developed an orthography for the Frasch dialect.[1]
