Bekim Ramadani (born 20 March 1970) is an ethnomusicologist, musicologist, educator and translator from North Macedonia. His scholarship focuses on Albanian musical folklore, particularly traditions from the Tetovo and Polog areas, as well as choral practice and music education.[1] A 2011 choral compilation prepared by Ramadani, Kush këndon, keq s'mendon, later became the primary corpus of a 2021 musicological study that analysed sixteen pieces from the volume in terms of harmony, structure, texture, tempo and musical metre.[2]

Education and academic career

[edit]

Ramadani was born in Orashë, near Tetovo, on 20 March 1970. He completed postgraduate studies in musicology at the University of Arts, Tirana in 2005–2006, with a thesis on the aesthetics of music in the thought of Eduard Hanslick and Ernst Bloch. From 2012 to 2018 he pursued doctoral studies at the Institute of Folklore "Marko Cepenkov" of Ss. Cyril and Methodius University in Skopje, completing a doctorate in folkloristics with a dissertation on the development and characteristics of musical folklore in Tetovo and its surroundings.[1]

He taught music in secondary schools in Skopje and Tetovo and at AAB University in Pristina. From 2012 he was also engaged at the University of Tetova in courses including music teaching methodology, ethnomusicology, musical folklore and music notation. In 2022 a university review committee recommended him for appointment as docent in musical folklore at the Faculty of Arts.[1]

Research and publications

[edit]

Ramadani's research and publishing work concerns Albanian folk-song traditions, musical folklore, ethnomusicology, music pedagogy and choral repertory. His scholarly publications have addressed subjects including two-part singing, migration songs, lullabies, wedding repertories, traditional musical instruments and individual performers of Albanian traditional music.[1]

A substantial part of his publishing activity has involved choral repertory. The 2011 compilation Kush këndon, keq s'mendon brought together sixteen choral pieces with accompanying audio material and was later used as the corpus for the 2021 study in PHILOSOPHICA.[2]

In 2015, Portalb reported on three publications associated with Ramadani: Fjalë pa këngë, his Albanian translation of Pavel Rojko's Metodika e mësimit të muzikës, and his Albanian translation of Eduard Hanslick's Për të bukurën muzikore. The report noted that the publications had been approved by the publishing commission of the State University of Tetova following academic reviews.[3]

Ramadani later translated Fritz Bose's Etnomuzikologjia into Albanian. A 2019 Portalb article on the translation and on the choral collection Na bashkoi kënga korale reproduced assessments by ethnomusicologist Spiro J. Shetuni and musicologist Marko Kolovski concerning the translation and the choral volume.[4]

His later publications include monographic work on Albanian traditional singers. In 2024, Portalb discussed his monograph on Hanife Sejfulla-Reçani and Shahindere Bërlajolli-Stafai and reported ethnomusicologist Krenar Doli's assessment of the book and of Ramadani's research methodology.[5]

Reception of published work

[edit]

Ramadani's choral publications have been discussed in both scholarly and cultural-media sources. The 2021 article by Teuta Alimi Selmani, Bajramali Idrizi and Lejla Alimi Lumani used all sixteen pieces from Kush këndon, keq s'mendon as material for a musicological analysis of harmony, form, texture, tempo and metre.[2]

Composer Edmond Buharaja devoted a separate eight-page review in the Macedonian music journal Muzika to Ramadani's book Meditim për artin tim. Buharaja described the volume as bringing together Ramadani's research, interviews and previously published or broadcast material from 2006 to 2016, and discussed its treatment of subjects ranging from aesthetics and music theory to folklore.[6]

Reviews published in Etnoalb also discussed individual studies by Ramadani. In a review of Etnoalb no. 2, Zeqirja Neziri summarized Ramadani's study “Haxhi Maqellara – vazhdimtar i denjë i traditës muzikore dibrane”, describing it as a broad portrait tracing the singer's background, education and musical career.[7] In a separate review, Zymer Ujkan Neziri discussed Ramadani's ethnomusicological study of instrument maker and performer Adnan Aliu, including its treatment of craft, repertory and the transmission of musical tradition.[8]

In a 2016 report on the promotion of Dëgjo këngën dhe harro brengën and Meditim për artin tim, Portalb summarized conductor Memli Kelmendi's discussion of Ramadani's work in collecting, arranging, systematizing and publishing choral songs based on folk material.[9]

The 2019 Portalb article on Etnomuzikologjia and Na bashkoi kënga korale reported Shetuni's evaluation of the Albanian translation of Bose and Kolovski's assessment of the choral collection.[4] In 2024, Portalb also reported Doli's evaluation of Ramadani's monograph on Sejfulla-Reçani and Bërlajolli-Stafai, including its use of musical transcription and documentary material.[5]
