Bachmann electronic GmbH is an Austrian company specializing in automation technology, headquartered in Feldkirch, Austria. The company operates internationally in industrial and maritime automation, as well as in the renewable energy sector, particularly in wind power.
History
[edit]Founding and early years
[edit]Bachmann was founded in 1970 by Gerhard Bachmann in Feldkirch, Austria.
Initially, the company focused on analogue control and regulation devices. From 1980, it developed microprocessor-based controls for injection molding machines, which entered the market in 1982. These early programmable logic controllers (PLCs) used single-bit microprocessor technology and LCD flat displays. In 1984, Bachmann introduced the first large-scale industrial use of electroluminescent displays. During the 1980s, the company expanded its range of microprocessor control systems and solutions for injection molding applications. In the early 1990s, it developed transputer-based controls and industrial PCs with terminals.[3]
Development of the M200 system
[edit]In 1998, the company launched the Intel-based M200 control system, a modular hardware and software system for industrial control.[4]
From the late 1990s onwards, the company's entry into wind energy automation involved the supply of controllers to turbine manufacturers, including Tacke Windtechnik, a German manufacturer later acquired by Enron Wind Corp. in 1997 and then by General Electric in 2002 following Enron's bankruptcy proceedings, with Bachmann controllers found in a number of GE 1.5 series wind turbines.[5][6] Senvion SE, the German turbine manufacturer formerly known as REpower Systems, used Bachmann as the manufacturer of its main turbine controller across its full range of onshore and offshore turbines.[7][8]
International expansion
[edit]Bachmann opened its first international branch offices in 2004 in the Netherlands and Denmark, focusing on wind energy and industrial automation sectors. In 2007, additional offices were established in China, India, and the United States. In 2009, Bachmann expanded its production capacity in Feldkirch and opened an office in Beijing.[9]
Acquisitions and new business areas
[edit]In the early 2010s, Bachmann expanded through two acquisitions. In 2010 it acquired μ-Sen GmbH, a condition monitoring specialist later renamed Bachmann Monitoring GmbH,[10] and in 2012, Bachmann acquired Certec EDV GmbH, an Austrian developer of web-based HMI and SCADA software, which later operated as Bachmann Visutec GmbH.[11] By 2013, the group's condition monitoring systems were installed in more than 1,300 wind turbines across Europe and the United States.[12] In 2014, Bachmann opened an office for marine applications in Bremen, Germany,[13] and relocated its U.S. headquarters to Boston, Massachusetts.[14]
Digitalization and recent developments
[edit]From 2014 onwards, Bachmann implemented additional software and digitalization solutions such as a new web-based SCADA system, model-based development methods, human–machine interface (HMI) solutions with integrated web visualization, retrofit and cybersecurity solutions for energy parks.
The SCADA and HMI solutions were updated to allow access via standard web browsers on PCs, tablets, and smartphones, replacing software that had previously required dedicated hardware or device-specific installations. Data structures were standardized according to IEC 61400-25.[15][16][17]
In 2020, Bachmann opened a branch office in Busan, South Korea.[18] The following year, the company acquired IM&P GmbH (Indalyz Monitoring & Prognostics), later integrating it into Bachmann Monitoring GmbH.[19]
In 2023, the company launched the M100 I/O system, the latest addition of its automation platform.[20] By 2024, Bachmann opened a new office in Oslo, Norway, and reported a revenue of €108 million with 555 employees across 20 locations worldwide.[21][22]
According to a 2024 publication by the Austrian Wind Energy Association (IG Windkraft), supported by the Federal Ministry of Climate Action (BMK), Bachmann's automation systems are deployed in more than 140,000 wind turbines worldwide.[23]
Subsidiaries
[edit]The Bachmann Group operates through several subsidiaries coordinated via Bachmann Holding GmbH, which serves as the corporate holding entity.[24]
Bachmann Visutec GmbH (Eisenstadt, Austria)
[edit]Bachmann Visutec provides visualization and operational software solutions within the Bachmann Group and is associated with the atvise® HMI/SCADA product line. It originates from the 2012 acquisition of Certec EDV GmbH.[25]
Bachmann Monitoring GmbH (Rudolstadt, Germany)
[edit]Bachmann Monitoring supplies condition monitoring systems and related services for wind turbines, including vibration analysis and remote monitoring.[26]
Products and solutions
[edit]Bachmann provides automation and control systems for industrial applications, with wind energy accounting for the largest share of its business. Beyond wind, the company also serves maritime, industrial, and power generation sectors. Its product portfolio centers on the modular M200 and M100 control platforms, which are used for real-time automation, motion control, and safety applications.[27]
The company's controller hardware includes climate module variants designed to withstand ambient temperatures ranging from −40 °C to 70 °C.[28]
HMI and SCADA software is offered through its atvise® product line, enabling web-based visualization and plant operation interfaces.
Bachmann also develops condition monitoring systems (CMS) for wind turbines and rotating machinery, including vibration analysis and remote monitoring services.[29]
For energy and grid applications, the company supplies power and grid protection systems and control solutions for power plants and renewable energy parks.[30]
In the maritime sector, Bachmann's automation systems are applied across shipbuilding and offshore applications. As part of the VDMA Working Group "MTP in Shipbuilding," the company has worked on modular automation software standards for the shipbuilding industry in cooperation with research institutes and equipment suppliers. Bachmann has also collaborated with the Norwegian design consortium OpenBridge to develop standardized bridge management interfaces for vessels.[31]
The company also offers retrofit and modernization services for existing wind turbines and industrial plants.[32]
