As well as a well-known scientist, Pomiankowski also hosts major administrative positions at University College London, widely regarded as number 3 university in the United Kingdom. So why can we not use a "primary source" (such as the UCL website) to show this?


Andrew Pomiankowski (born 1959) is an English evolutionary biologist known for extensive experimental and theoretical works on Sexual selection, the Evolution of sexual reproduction, and the Origin of Life.

Biography

Andrew Pomiankowski was born in London in 1959. He is of Polish descent (his emigré family descends from a Pomiankowski family in Poland). His grandfather's cousin was Josef Pomiankowski[1], a Field Marshal in the Astro-Hungarian Army and the Plenipotentiary in Istanbul who wrote an account of the Armenian genocide by the Turks[2]. His grandfather Stanislaw was a victim of the Katyn Massacre, buried in Kiev.[3][4]

He graduated from New College at the University of Oxford in 1981, winning the Gibbs Prize for top First Class Honours Degree.[5]

He spent a year (1982) at Harvard University, USA in the group of Richard Lewontin on a Kennedy Scholarship[6] before moving back to England for postgraduate study in 1983 at the University of Sussex with John Maynard Smith, graduating with a D. Phil. in 1987.

Pomiankowski's tutor, Richard Dawkins, had this to say about him: Andrew Pomiankowski won his place at New College, got an exceptionally high first-class degree, went on to do a DPhil (Oxford- and Sussex-speak for PhD) with John Maynard Smith at Sussex University, and is now a professor of evolutionary genetics at University College, London. He was just one of many very clever pupils whom it was my privilege to teach." [7]

He held postdoctoral appointments at University of Oxford, working with W.D. Hamilton 1987-1991.[8]

In 1991 he moved with his Royal Society University Research Fellowship to the Galton Laboratory of Genetics and Biometry, University College London (UCL), where he became Lecturer, Reader, and ultimately Professor in 2001.[9]

In 2022 he became the JBS Haldane Professor of Genetics at UCL. He became the Head of Department of the merged Department of Genetics, Evolution, and Ecology, and he is currently the director of the Division of Biosciences,[10] the largest division at UCL.

Earlier in his career, he largely explored the Darwinian conception of sexual selection via population genetics theory, particularly Amotz Zahavi's "handicap principle".[11][12][13][14][15][16][17]

His work helped to revolutionize earlier Darwinian ideas about sexual selection. Ever since Darwin's original work, Darwin's thesis on sexual selection was largely dismissed, including by Alfred Russel Wallace. R.A. Fisher did promote a theoretical Runaway Model of Sexual Selection (Fisherian runaway) in 1930. However, until the 1980s and 1990s, particularly through the mathematical models of Lande and Kirkpatrick [18][19], most biologists were more in favour of a view of mate choice that merely helped whole species to reproduce. This is today considered rather a group selectionist view view of evolution -- see Group Selection. After the revival of interest in sexual selection by evolutionary biologists, Pomiankowski's publications were frequently mentioned in news media in the 1990s, for example in The New Scientist.[20]

On the strength of this work he became an invited Schering Fellow at The Wissenschaftskolleg zu Berlin, known in English as the Berlin Institute for Advanced Study for a sabbatical in 1996/1997.[21]

After this largely theoretical work, Pomiankowski became interested in an empirical system. Impressed by a paper by Gerald Wilkinson, Laurence Hurst and Andrew Pomiankowski wrote a News and Views article in Nature, "The Eyes Have It",[22] on the Stalk-eyed fly Teleopsis dalmanni. This species has eyes on long stalks, which are particularly long in the males. Males "joust" with each other for control of females, and the winner is usually the male with the longest eye stalks. Pomiankowski traveled to Malaysia to collect stocks of these flies, and he and his research group helped to develop the Malaysian stalk-eyed flies (known informally as "stalkies") into a model system for the study of sexual selection. He and his colleagues subsequently published a number of highly cited works on sexual selection in this species.[23][24][25]

Recently, he has become interested in theories of the Origin of Life and Eukaryogenesis (the origin of eukaryotes) with his UCL colleague Nick Lane and other collaborators.[26][27] This work has attracted considerable attention among other evolutionary biologists.[28][29]

Today (August 2026), as well as holding a named Professorship (J.B.S. Haldane Professor) at University College London, and managing a number of UCL Departments in the Biosciences, he is still also an active scientist. He has 157 published scientific articles and book chapters listed on Clarivate's Web of Science, and his work has been cited over 9,000 times by other scientific articles.[30] On Google Scholar, which is automated and therefore has a somewhat more lax attitude to what is a scholarly article, he has over 200 publications, and has been cited over 14,000 times.[31]
