Andrei Alexandrovich Boltenko (born 14 July 1973) is a stage director, producer and screenwriter. He was the stage director and a co-writer of the 2014 Winter Olympics opening ceremony in Sochi.[1][2]

He directed the Russian presentation during the Olympic flag handover at the closing ceremony of the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver and the Eurovision Song Contest 2009 in Moscow. He is the founder of ABV studio and a co-founder of Raketamedia.[3][4][2]

Biography

Boltenko began working in television at the age of 16. He worked at VID, on music programmes, music videos and advertising.[5]

In 1997, he graduated from the international journalism department of the history and philology faculty at the Peoples' Friendship University of Russia.[6]

He worked at ORT, later Channel One Russia, from 1999, and served as its chief director from 2005 to 2016.[7][5]

In 2003, he founded ABV Studio, specialising in the staging and television production of large entertainment events. He is also a co-founder of the video design studio Raketamedia.[6][2]

Olympic ceremonies

Boltenko was the stage director and a co-writer of the opening ceremony of the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi. In an interview with Kommersant, he said that work on the production had taken almost three years and that its aim was to tell a visual story about Russia that would be accessible to an international audience.[1][2]

In 2010, he directed the Russian presentation during the handover of the Olympic flag to Sochi at the closing ceremony of the Winter Olympics in Vancouver.[3][2]

Music and multimedia productions

In 2009, Boltenko directed the Eurovision Song Contest in Moscow. His work on the contest received three TEFI awards: an individual award for television programme direction and two shared awards for programme production and production design.[8][9]

In 2011, he worked on the reopening ceremony of the historic stage of the Bolshoi Theatre, with responsibility for video projections. That year, he also served as television director of the Gorby 80 concert at London's Royal Albert Hall.[10][11]

In 2016, he was creative producer of The Master and Margarita: I Was There, an online reading of Mikhail Bulgakov's novel organised by Google and Mosfilm. The project used chroma key, real-time computer graphics and 360-degree video, and was streamed on YouTube.[12]

In 2017, he was credited as the author of the closing ceremony of Expo 2017 in Astana.[13]

In 2019, he directed Azerbaijan: A Timeless Presence, with music by Sami Yusuf, for the opening of the 43rd session of the UNESCO World Heritage Committee in Baku.[14]

In 2022, he was creative producer and show director of Poem of the Eternal City in Samarkand.[15]

In 2024, he was artistic director of the folk opera This Is Suzdal, staged at the Suzdal Kremlin for the city's thousandth anniversary.[16]

In 2025, he was the creator of the musical production Kochevye naroda, made for the opening of the Third International Buddhist Forum in Kalmykia. The performance was staged outdoors in the steppe, using large LED screens.[17]

Television and film

Boltenko worked on the television programmes Two Stars and King of the Ring and contributed to the creation of Evening Urgant. He also directed TEFI and MTV Russia Music Awards ceremonies.[18][5][19]

At Timur Bekmambetov's invitation, he filmed Yegor's birthday sequence in Day Watch (2006).[20]

In 2012, he co-directed After School, a television series jointly produced by Channel One and Disney.[21]

In 2020, he was one of the directors of Cursed Days, a series filmed remotely during the COVID-19 pandemic.[22]

  • 2009: Three TEFI awards for Eurovision 2009: television programme direction, programme production and production design.[9]
  • 2009: Certificate of Honour of the President of the Russian Federation, for participation in the preparation and staging of Eurovision 2009.[26]
  • 2011: Commendation of the President of the Russian Federation, for contributions to the reconstruction, restoration, technical equipment and reopening of the Bolshoi Theatre.[27]

Personal life

Boltenko is married to actress Marina Alexandrova. They have two children, Andrei and Ekaterina.[28]
