Biography
[edit]Anannya Mahanta was born on 5 November 1996 in Guwahati, Assam, India.[1]. She was interested in Indian classical dance forms from her childhood. She started learning Sattriya when she was only seven years old[2]. She first trained in Sattriya dance under Guru Govinda Saikia and later under Dr Bhabananda Borbayan, Sharodi Saikia, and Naren Chandra Boruah. She studied at Rangayan in Guwahati, focusing on dance, theatre, and music, and eventually earned her Visharad certification along with diplomas in Sattriya from Sangeet Sattra[3]
Personal life
[edit]Her Parents is Lila Kanta Mahanta (father), Late Bonti Mahanta (mother). Her husband is Tashvin Jugnarain.
Career
[edit]Anannya,completed her studies in astrophysics from Assam Science and Technology University in Guwahati and received a gold medal in the discipline[4]. has conducted extensive research on the Sattriya dance form and has used the results of her research in her dance choreography.
Anannya has performed at major dance festivals in India, such as 100-day-long festival of dance from 9th March to 16th June 2024, in an informal association with Visakhapatnam-based Tarakeshwara Foundation[5], Indian Dance Festival, and International Indian Classical Dance Festival, Bharat Utsav at the India International Centre in New Delhi, even at the FIDE Chess Olympiad Opening Ceremony in Chennai. She has performed at various venues outside India through performances at The Nehru Centre in London[6], Celebrating the Grace of Sattriya at the Churchill College, University of Cambridge[7], Dancer Anannya Mahanta brings Sattriya Dance to the Jesus College, University of Oxford.[8]

[edit]In 2023, Anannya Mahanta was honoured with Best Sattriya Dancer in Guwahati at Super Woman Awards 2023.[9] In 2025, she was nominated for ‘Emerging Star Award’ at Influencer Magazine Awards 2025 (E3).[10] In 2026, Anannya Mahanta received The "Face of the Month" by Byatikram Group, held at Hotel Mayflower in Panbazar, Guwahati.[11]
Artistic style and research
[edit]Mahanta's work explores themes related to the philosophy of Srimanta Sankardev, ritual performance traditions, and the contemporary evolution of Sattriya dance. Her artistic practice combines classical Assamese traditions with contemporary presentation formats aimed at global audiences.
