American Hat Makers is a hat manufacturing company based in Watsonville, California. Founded in 1972 by Gary Watrous, the company produces handcrafted leather, straw, and felt hats, and distributes to both domestic and international markets. History
[edit]Gary Watrous began crafting leather hats in 1972 in Freedom, California. What began as a small garage operation grew over time into a full-scale manufacturing company. American Hat Makers later moved into a larger facility in Watsonville, California, and expanded its product line to include a variety of materials and styles.
In 2016, the company was highlighted by the U.S. Department of Commerce as a successful exporter, noted for its use of government trade resources to reach international markets.[1]
Watrous, a leather craftsman and hatter, built the brand from the ground up, and remains a central figure in the company’s legacy.[2]
