Alexander Timm is an American businessman and casualty actuary. He is the founder and chief executive officer (CEO) of Root, Inc., a publicly traded technology company whose operating subsidiaries include Root Insurance Company, headquartered in Columbus, Ohio.[1]

Early life and education

[edit]

Timm grew up in Ohio in an entrepreneurial family tied to the insurance industry; his father, Christopher Timm, served as president of Century Surety and founded an environmental liability managing general agency.[2] At age 14, Timm began working in the actuarial department at his father's company, conducting reserve development on excess and surplus (E&S) lines of business.[2]

Timm attended Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa, earning degrees in actuarial science, mathematics, and accounting, alongside coursework in computer science.[2] While completing his college education, he served as an actuarial exam review instructor at Drake University and worked at State Auto Insurance across actuarial, claims, and mergers and acquisitions (M&A) departments.[2][1] Upon graduating in 2011 and attaining his fellowship in the Casualty Actuarial Society (FCAS), he entered a leadership development program at Nationwide Mutual Insurance Company.[2]

Career

[edit]

At Nationwide Mutual Insurance Company, Timm held several management and consulting roles, culminating as a senior strategy consultant focused on corporate strategy and property and casualty insurance, studying the effects of mobile technology and data on the industry.[1]

In March 2015, Timm founded Root Insurance with initial backing from venture firm Drive Capital.[3] The company was founded on a mobile-first model utilizing smartphone telematics and machine learning to evaluate driving behavior for auto insurance pricing.[4][5][6]

As CEO, Timm led Root through its initial public offering (IPO) on the Nasdaq exchange (NASDAQ: ROOT) in October 2020, raising over $700 million.[7][3] He subsequently guided the company's expansion into embedded insurance models, negotiating a partnership with vehicle retailer Carvana to integrate auto insurance into the vehicle checkout.[8]

Under Timm's executive leadership, Root expanded its carrier licenses to all 50 U.S. states and actively wrote policies across 37 states, leading the company to record its first full year of net profitability in 2024.[9][10]

Other affiliations

[edit]

Timm is a Fellow of the Casualty Actuarial Society (FCAS), a member of the American Academy of Actuaries,[2] and was named a Henry Crown Fellow at the Aspen Institute in 2023.[11]
