Adam Equipment (stylised from 2026 as Adam) is an international supplier of weighing and measurement products. Founded in 1972, the company is headquartered in Milton Keynes, UK, with local offices in Connecticut, USA; Felde, Germany; Johannesburg, South Africa; Bibra Lake, Australia; and Wuhan China. The company distributes its products through an international network. Significant users of Adam products include Jaguar Land Rover[1], Proctor and Gamble and Harvard University.
History
[edit]Adam Equipment was founded in 1972 by Alan Storey in Bletchley, UK. The company began by selling retail and industrial scales by other brands, before moving into manufacturing its own products. Adam began expanding outside of the UK in 1990, when it opened its South Africa office. Currently, Adam is believed to be the only weighing scale and balance manufacturer with its own office in South Africa. Further expansion came in 1998 when Adam opened its first office in the US, before moving to a dedicated, purpose-built facility in Oxford, Connecticut in 2015.[2] Later, offices were opened in Australia (2006) and Germany in 2015. The most significant expansion outside of the UK, however, is probably the opening of Adam’s factory in Wuhan, China in 2005, making them, at the time, the first UK based business to wholly own a production facility in China. This allowed Adam’s team to not only develop, but to cost effectively produce its own electro-magnetic force restoration system for use in its laboratory balances. It was during this period of expansion that Adam increased its dealer network, and today only sells its products via its distributors. The most significant development at Adam in recent history was the acquisition of the business by Indutrade AB in 2019 [3]. As a multi-billion-pound technology and industrial group based, the Swedish company allowed Adam to invest or new technologies and products to strengthen their offering, and market presence. In 2025, Richard Storey, son of company founder Alan Storey, stepped down as CEO. Richard had led the company since Alan’s 2019 retirement. The company’s current CEO is Colin Maher. In 2026, Adam Equipment underwent a full rebrand (changing from ‘Adam Equipment’ to simply ‘Adam’ in its branding) and announced a new range of products, with the promise of regular new product launches in the coming years.[4]
