Acromind Initiative

[edit]

Acromind Initiative is a Ugandan organisation that uses circus, play and creative activities in programmes involving children and young people. The organisation is based in Kampala, Uganda. Its work includes activities intended to provide young people with opportunities for participation, creativity and community building. Acromind has worked in collaboration with international organisations including Clowns Without Borders Sweden.[1]

History

[edit]

Acromind's work is associated with Ugandan circus practitioner Patrick Olango. An annual report published by Clowns Without Borders Sweden in 2024 describes Olango as one of the organisation's partners and as the founder of Famous Friends Uganda, described in the report as a circus school for young people in extremely vulnerable areas of Uganda.[2]

Clowns Without Borders Sweden's 2025 annual report identifies AcroMind Initiative Limited as a local partner in Uganda. The report describes a project providing children who had become single mothers with opportunities for psychosocial support through play, community and creative activities.[1]

Activities

[edit]

Acromind describes its activities as using circus and creative expression as tools for working with children and young people. Activities include circus-related practices such as acrobatics, juggling and performance, together with group activities and creative expression.[3]

The organisation describes its work as focusing on areas including confidence, communication, collaboration, leadership, self-expression and community participation.[3]

Acromind also describes safeguarding, dignity and the creation of safe environments as part of its approach to working with children and young people.[4]

Partnership with Clowns Without Borders Sweden

[edit]

Acromind has collaborated with Clowns Without Borders Sweden on activities in Uganda. The Swedish organisation's 2025 annual report states that a project involving children who had become single mothers was conducted together with its partner AcroMind Initiative Limited in Uganda.[1]

The project used play, community and creative activities as forms of psychosocial support. The report states that the activities were intended to provide participants with opportunities to build networks and exchange experiences with others in similar circumstances.[1]

In a public post, Swedish Ambassador to Uganda Maria Håkansson described visiting an activity in Bwaize where Acromind, together with Patrick Olango and his team, brought vulnerable children and young people together for activities in a safe and creative environment. The post linked the activity to collaboration with Clowns Without Borders Sweden and described the stated aims as building confidence, discipline and hope.[5]

Youth development

[edit]

Acromind's work uses circus and creative activities as a means of engaging children and young people. Its stated approach includes opportunities for young people to practise communication, collaboration and leadership through group activities and creative projects.[3]

The organisation also describes community participation and a sense of belonging as elements of its work with young people.[4]
