The AATEL License (Anti-AI Training Ethical License) is an ethical source software license created by Italian visionary Mirko Perrone [1] in 2026. It allows source code sharing while prohibiting the use of the code for training artificial intelligence models and for military applications, and is distributed as a customizable template via a public Git repository under the "aatel-license" organization.

A related variant, AATEL-IC, applies similar principles to internet content such as articles, documentation and datasets.

The license is grounded in three core ethical principles: respect for human ingenuity, peaceful and non-harmful use of software, and reciprocal sustainability when commercial profit is generated from the code.

Characteristics

AATEL permits use, modification, and distribution for most purposes but explicitly forbids:

Training, fine-tuning, or improving AI/ML models
Military, warfare, or weapons-related applications
Use in mass surveillance systems

It is not OSI-approved open source but "source-available" with ethical restrictions.

Background

Created in response to non-consensual use of code for commercial AI training, AATEL seeks to restore balance between openness and creator rights in the AI era.

Reception

The license has sparked debate in developer communities about enforceability and open source compatibility.
