2026 RZ is a near-Earth Apollo-type asteroid discovered on 4 September 2026 by the MAPS survey at San Pedro de Atacama, Chile.[1] It was observed at multiple observatories including Atacama Desert Observatory, Farpoint Observatory, Palomar/ZTF, Crni Vrh, Petit Cosquet, Farra d’Isonzo, Sormano, and Kitt Peak/Spacewatch.[1]
Orbit
[edit]2026 RZ follows an Apollo-type orbit with a semimajor axis of 1.348 AU, an eccentricity of 0.39, and an inclination of 3.24°. It completes an orbit around the Sun every 1.57 years. Its perihelion distance is 0.82 AU and aphelion distance is 1.876 AU.[1]
Close approaches
[edit]The asteroid has a Minimum Orbit Intersection Distance (MOID) with Earth of 0.00089 AU (~133,000 km), indicating a potential for close flybys.[1]
Physical characteristics
[edit]With an absolute magnitude of 29.5, 2026 RZ is estimated to be only a few meters in diameter, making it a very small near-Earth object.[1]
