The 2025 Lyman offensive is an ongoing military engagement in the Russo-Ukrainian war between the Russian Armed Forces and the Armed Forces of Ukraine for control over the Ukrainian city of Lyman.
Background
[edit]Lyman was captured by Russian troops on 27 May 2022.[1][2] The control of Lyman, while it is not a large city, gave Russia control of a key road that leads to Sloviansk and Kramatorsk.[1][2] From 10 September, Ukrainian troops advanced to Lyman as part of a counteroffensive launched in Kharkiv Oblast, and engaged Russian troops in a battle.[3][4] On 1 October, a Russian Defense Ministry spokesman announced that Russian forces were withdrawing from the city, hours after Russian president Vladimir Putin had declared Donetsk Oblast, Lyman's region, to have been annexed by Russia.[5][6][7][8]
Battle
[edit]On 4 January 2025, Russian troops advance across the Zherebets river into the centre of Ivanivka uk, northwest of Kreminna and north of Lyman.[9]
On 28 March 2025, Russian forces advance northwest of Novolyubivka and likely seize this village northeast of Lyman.[10]
On 21 December 2025, Ukrainian military observer Kostyantyn Mashovets reported and confirmed that the Russian forces currently occupy positions in southeastern Lyman.[11]
In late spring and early summer 2026, Russian forces advanced to within 13 kilometers of Sviatohirsk, northwest of Lyman. Vladimir Putin claimed on 1 September to have captured this city. However, on 7 September, the commander of Ukraine's 3rd Army Corps, Brigadier General Andriy Biletsky, recorded a video in city-centre denying the capture.[12]
According to military analyst Clément Molin, a Ukrainian counter-offensive began on 22 May 2026 when a mechanised battalion of the 3rd Assault Brigade, supported by two other brigades, the 60th and 66th brigades from the 3rd Army Corps, launched a mechanised offensive. Russian drones were significantly jammed during the counter-offensive. By the 25 of June, Ukrainian forces advanced in eastern Lypove, southeast of Borova.[13] Viktor Tregubov, spokesperson for the Armed Forces of Ukraine, stated in late June that the Ukrainian forces were successfully pushing Russia back north of Lyman.[14] While the Ukrainian and Russian general staffs remained silent, it was announced that Ukrainian troops have retaken territory from Russian forces and pushed them back towards the western bank of the Zherebets river in early September.[15]
On 15 September, Andriy Biletsky, confirmed the Ukrainian counteroffensive near Lyman, named "Operation Vivaldi".[16]
Analysis
[edit]According to the Institute for the Study of War, Operation Vivaldi disrupted the Russian goal of encircling the Ukrainian fortress belt in Donetsk Oblast.[17]
