Bretstein is a former municipality in the district of Murtal in the state of Styria in central Austria. Since the 2015 Styria municipal structural reform, it is part of the municipality Pölstal.[2]

History

During World War II, Nazi Germany operated the Bretstein concentration camp, a subcamp of the Mauthausen concentration camp, in Bretstein, whose prisoners were Spanish Republicans and German Jehovah's Witnesses.[3] Five Spaniards were murdered after an unsuccessful escape attempt.[3]
