Amtkeli (Georgian: ამტყელი Abkhaz: Амтҟьал)[2] is a small river in north-western Georgia. It originates in the Caucasus Mountains, in the region of Upper Abkhazia,[1] in the western part of the Chkhalta range near Amtkeli pass. It flows south to Lake Amtkeli and joins the Kodori River. Its catchment area is 398 square kilometres (154 mi2).[3]
The Amtkeli is fed by snow, rain and groundwater. Floods occur in late spring and summer, and the low flows occur in winter.[3]

Having unilaterally declared independence from Georgia in 1992, Abkhazia is formally recognised as an independent state by 4 UN member states (three other states previously recognised it but then withdrew their recognition), while the remainder of the international community recognizes it as de jure Georgian territory. Georgia continues to claim the area as its own territory, designating it as Russian-occupied territory.
