Amber Johnston (born March 10, 1979) is an American television personality known for her appearance on 7 Little Johnstons on TLC, starring her family, which has run for 17 seasons since 2015.[1] Johnston has achondroplasia and is married to Trent Johnston, with whom she has five children also with achondroplasia.[2] She also works as a realtor and social worker.[3][4]
Early life
[edit]Johnston was born as the oldest child and only child in her family with achondroplasia, which causes short stature, in California.[5] Her father left their family and her mother later remarried. Her mother later passed, and she was raised mainly by her step-father.[6][7] As a teenager, she met Trent Johnston at a Little People of America conference in 1995. They became friends and eventually dated, leading to their marriage in 1998.[8] She was seen in an uncredited appearance on the second season of TLC of Little People, Big World.[9]
Education
[edit]She earned both her Bachelor of Science in 2024 and Master of Science in 2025, both in Social Work from Middle Georgia State University.[10]
Career
[edit]Before her show began, she was working as a K-5 computer lab instructor for Monroe County Schools.[11][12] She eventually obtained her realtor's license and began selling homes at Washburn & Associates in Georgia.[13]
In 2014, Amber and her husband, Trent, moved to Forsyth, Georgia.[14] Her family is active in the Little People of America national chapter, with Amber having served as district director and the family frequently attending the annual conferences.[15]
7 Little Johnstons
[edit]In 2014, the family was approached by TLC after their appearance as guests on the Anderson Live with Anderson Cooper.[16] The network pitched an idea to document their lives as the world's largest family living with achondroplasia. The show, titled 7 Little Johnstons, premiered in 2015 with a one-hour special, and has run for 17 seasons.[17][18][19]
Personal life
[edit]She married Trent Johnston on November 21, 1998, later giving birth to her biological son, Jonah, in 1999, and their biological daughter, Elizabeth, in 2001.[20] In 2004, they adopted Anna from an orphanage in Siberia, Russia when she was four years-old. They later adopted two more children: Alex, from Seoul, South Korea, in 2005 and Emma, from China, in 2011. Both biological children and all three adopted children all have achondroplasia, leading to the family frequently being dubbed the "biggest little person family in the world." In 2023, Elizabeth gave birth to Amber's first grandchild, Leighton.[21] As of 2023, her daughter, Anna, is no longer in contact with the family.[22]
She has suffered from Chiari malformation, which traps fluid in the spinal chord, which was operated on by Dr. Ben Carson at Johns Hopkins University.[23]
