Adel Altamimi (born March 7, 1989), also known by the nickname "Kyokushin", is an Iraqi professional mixed martial artist and bare-knuckle boxer. Born in Baghdad, Altamimi has competed professionally in organizations including Bellator MMA, King of the Cage, Gladiator Challenge and Bare Knuckle Fighting Championship (BKFC).[1][2]
Altamimi attracted wider attention following his victory at Bellator 214 in January 2019, where he defeated Brandon McMahan by first-round armbar submission. His manager is Tai Savet. [2]
Early life
[edit]Altamimi was born in Baghdad, Iraq. His interest in martial arts began at a young age, and he began taking karate lessons at approximately nine years old.[1]
After moving to Los Angeles as an adult, Altamimi began competing in regional mixed martial arts events.[1]
Mixed martial arts career
[edit]Altamimi began his professional mixed martial arts career in 2014. Before joining Bellator, he competed in regional promotions including Gladiator Challenge and King of the Cage.[2][1]
Bellator MMA
[edit]Altamimi made his Bellator debut at Bellator 214 at The Forum in Inglewood, California, on January 26, 2019. He faced Brandon McMahan and won by armbar submission at 1:16 of the first round.[2]
Actor Chris Pratt, whom Altamimi had trained with in Los Angeles, accompanied Altamimi during the event and was in his corner.[1]
Altamimi next faced Salim Mukhidinov at Bellator 229 on October 4, 2019, losing by unanimous decision.[2]
On January 25, 2020, Altamimi faced AJ Agazarm at Bellator 238. Agazarm defeated Altamimi by triangle choke submission in the third round.[2]
Martial arts background
[edit]Altamimi holds black belts in karate and jiu-jitsu.[1]
His professional mixed martial arts record stands at eight victories and seven losses, with all eight of his victories coming by stoppage. Seven of his victories were by submission and one by knockout.[2]
Training career
[edit]In addition to competing, Altamimi has worked as a martial arts trainer in Los Angeles. Arab News reported that he worked at Unbreakable Performance Center and trained figures including actor Chris Pratt and rapper Wiz Khalifa.[1]
