[edit]- 3 June - Chilean Army officer Jose Antonio Vidaurre attempts to overthrow the Prieto government. The coup fails and Vidaurre is later executed.

- 17 November - The 1837 Valdivia earthquake is felt from Concepción to Chonos Archipelago.
