Single 40 Years Old

[edit]

I found this page while looking at random stub articles. The plot summary may or may not be a copyvio as it is copied nearly one to one from the translation of the cited source by google. Out of the four given sources, one is deprecated while another is only a brief mention. I would like to fix these issues but I cannot read the sources as they are written in Persian. Given this, I’m at a bit of a loss at what I should do with this article.

Are the sources notable? Historian Felix (talk) 21:26, 26 September 2026 (UTC)Reply
Uhm I’m not sure. Other than the two sources I already talked about, Tabnak seems to be unreliable, and I don’t know about cinema press TranquillStar (talk) 21:42, 26 September 2026 (UTC)Reply
alright if they're not reliable, we should get experienced editors to help with this and revert it to AFC Historian Felix (talk) 21:44, 26 September 2026 (UTC)Reply

its to move drafts to get reviewed to get into mainspace Historian Felix (talk) 23:38, 26 September 2026 (UTC)Reply
No, we absolutely should not send it to AfC, @Historian Felix (and @TranquillStar). If the article doesn't meet WP:NFILM, then it can be WP:PRODded or sent to Articles for Deletion - but if you do that, please make sure you check that there really are no good sources (WP:BEFORE).
TranquillStar is correct, AfC is for reviewing new drafts. Sometimes articles can be turned back into drafts, but there's special criteria for that - see WP:DRAFTIFY. This article is too old to be draftified and has copyright violation tags. Felix, I appreciate that you're trying to help, but you may need more experience before answering questions here. Meadowlark (talk) 23:41, 26 September 2026 (UTC)Reply
Thanks for the clarification :D I'll try and find other reliable sources for the article, and if I can't I'll probably prod it since the last edit that added content was 1-2 years ago. TranquillStar (talk) 00:12, 27 September 2026 (UTC)Reply
@TranquillStar, if you haven't encountered WP:TWINKLE yet, I really recommend it! It makes PRODs, CSDs and AfDs so much easier by automating the whole process for you. For example, articles can only be PRODded once - Twinkle will check for you and stop the process if it detects a previous PROD, at which point you know you have to go to AfD instead. Good luck with the search! Meadowlark (talk) 00:54, 27 September 2026 (UTC)Reply

Suggesting an article?

[edit]

I would like to suggest an article about documentary filmmaker Chris Farina, founder of Rosalia Films. I am his niece and therefore have a conflict of interest, so I understand I can't create or edit the article directly.

Independent sources that may help establish notability include:

His film "World Peace and Other 4th Grade Achievements" already has its own Wikipedia article. Is there a way to provide these sources for consideration by an independent writer or editor? I'm happy to clarify factual details if needed. Ldunham00 (talk) 03:44, 28 September 2026 (UTC)Reply

@Ldunham00: Hey there, and welcome to the Teahouse. WP:Requested articles is to my knowledge your best bet - you can place his name (with the sources you have provided) under the relevant category, and an interested editor (at some point, the take-up there is not particuarly quick) can create the article. The other option I am aware of is the the reward board, the only sanctioned method of paid editing on Wikipedia.
However, neither of these options guarantee an article. The subject still needs to meet Wikipedia's notability guidelines to not be deleted, which (generally) requires at least two reliable, secondary sources with extensive coverage on the subject to exist. I haven't looked at your provided sources for notability, though I am happy to do so if wanted? Sycerion (talk) 06:18, 28 September 2026 (UTC)Reply
Thank you so much! If you would be willing to take a peek at the sources to let me know if you think they would cut it so I know I'm not wasting my time pursuing it further, I'd be extremely grateful. He's gotten a lot of coverage but I don't know if the sources are what Wikipedia is looking for. Ldunham00 (talk) 18:12, 28 September 2026 (UTC)Reply
@Ldunham00: Thanks for your response. I am just one editor, and thanks to Wikipedia' consensus-based discussion model my opinion is not authoritative - I may feel that the sources are enough for an article to be kept, while others may not.
That said, I am not entirely confident in this passing the Articles for Creation process. Wikipedia's general notability guideline states that articles need significant coverage in reliable sources that are independent of the subject. Most of the sources you have provided incorporate substantial interviews - as they are not independent, they do not count towards assessing notability. However, this is definitely not as clear-cut as some articles we see go through this process. Our notability guideline for creative professionals does allow for notability when they have created or played a major role in co-creating a significant or well-known work. As there is an article for World Peace and Other Fourth-Grade Achievements, Farina would likely pass this guideline, as the work would be considered 'significant' under Wikipedia's standards.
Honestly I think you would be best to have a go at Articles for Creation, as this is (to me) not obviously non-notable. Sycerion (talk) 07:20, 29 September 2026 (UTC)Reply
Thank you!! Ldunham00 (talk) 20:01, 29 September 2026 (UTC)Reply
@Ldunham00 Thank you for declaring your conflict of interest. Wikipedia doesn't, by policy, prevent you from writing a draft article about a topic with which you have a COI. However, policy insists you use the WP:Articles for creation process so that experienced editors can review your writing before it is accepted into the encyclopedia. Relying on WP:Requested articles is unlikely to be successful. If you decide to go ahead, please read Help:Your first article and WP:NOLLM and maybe practice first by expanding articles on similar topics that already exist. Mike Turnbull (talk) 10:38, 28 September 2026 (UTC)Reply
Thank you so much, I may try that because it sounds like it may go a little faster than hoping someone else takes up the job. Unfortunately he is dying of ALS (and making another film about it)... I'd like to try to get the article published while he's around to know it's on here. Ldunham00 (talk) 18:15, 28 September 2026 (UTC)Reply
As a fellow Virginian, if you make or outline the draft, I'll be happy to contribute to improving it! If you can find more independent coverage, I think that would help a lot. Gebble (talk) 22:29, 29 September 2026 (UTC)Reply

Username with non-Latin letters on the English Wikipedia

[edit]

I'm active on the Hebrew Wikipedia and I imagine that my current Hebrew username is opaque or unreadable and hard to type without copy-paste for English Wikipedia editors. Should I try to ask for a new username with Latin letters if I want to be active and collaborate with other editors on the English Wikipedia? דויד פון תמר (talk) 22:24, 28 September 2026 (UTC)Reply

You're not required to change your username, and it's perfectly fine to have non Latin characters, but if you'd like it to be easier for people to mention you or navigate to your page, you can create a legitimate sockpuppet account in Latin letters (perhaps the transliteration of your Hebrew username, or something else), redirect all of the relevant pages to your real account's equivalents, and declare the relation between the accounts. It may also be helpful to set your signature to this name (but keep the links the same; the less redirects, the better) so it's intuitively clear what characters should be typed to mention you.
Hope this helps, but I'm sure someone a little bit more in the know in this area particularly will probably be along soon to help you a bit more. Cheers, and welcome to enwiki and the Teahouse! Shield \\ |T| - |C| - Solidarity \\ 22:30, 28 September 2026 (UTC)Reply

Thank you @Zzuuzz and @.sh1eldo7. My original username from almost a decade ago was Lispwave. I still think it's beautiful today, and it still redirects to my current username. I created it from the name of the Lisp programming language. I think maybe I can adopt my original username Lispwave as my primary username again. דויד פון תמר (talk) 22:58, 28 September 2026 (UTC)Reply
... which is simpler because it involves keeping the same account and same username while making a mostly-cosmetic change to your signature. TooManyFingers (he/him · talk) 22:52, 28 September 2026 (UTC)Reply
There's an editor whose signature is their Chinese-character name followed by their Latin-character name, and that seems to work well. I confess I can't tell one Chinese-character name from another very well, so seeing the English helps me remember who this is, while still keeping the preferred form of their name on display. helper

[edit]

How can I be a helper/volunteer to help like rollback edits that are against rules etc? Nrlref013 (talk) 03:48, 29 September 2026 (UTC)Reply

Hi @Nrlref013, this is called recent changes patrolling! I've been doing it for a few months now and quite enjoy it.
To get started, I'd highly recommend installing Twinkle, which is sort of like an add-on/extension for Wikipedia (though we call them gadgets). Then, you can head over to the page Special:RecentChanges, which displays all the newest edits to Wikipedia. From there, you can filter the list to only display edits that appear suspicious/of poor quality, have a look at them, and click Twinkle's rollback button to revert them.
Once you've reverted an edit, it's good practice to let the user know on their talk page. There are some preset user warning templates that speed up this process, which Twinkle should automatically direct you to use.
A user is typically given four warnings, at which point you should probably report them to Wikipedia:Administrator intervention against vandalism. This can also be partly automated with Twinkle, by opening the TW dropdown menu on their user talk, clicking ARV, and providing a brief explanation as to why you're filing the report.
If you develop a good reputation of reverting bad edits and always issuing user warnings, you can request rollback rights, which will allow you to revert vandalism faster, and use powerful tools such as Huggle and Interceptor, which show you a feed of suspicious edits and allow you to revert them with a single button press, automatically issuing relevant warnings and reporting to WP:AIV
If you have any further questions, feel free to either ask them here or on my talk page :) crtbob@talk:~$ ls contribs 04:32, 29 September 2026 (UTC)Reply
I suggest, Nrlref013 (and Crtbob), that it would be better to make a couple of hundred nontrivial edits to articles, and to have these patrolled, before patrolling the edits of others. -- Hoary (talk)WWU 👍︎ 04:56, 29 September 2026 (UTC)Reply
I probably should have considered this, actually. This is a good idea, Nrlref. crtbob@talk:~$ ls contribs 05:00, 29 September 2026 (UTC)Reply
Thanks all. Nrlref013 (talk) 05:03, 29 September 2026 (UTC)Reply
But if after those edits you find yourself still interested in RCP, I’d highly recommend WP:CVUA. It’s a great system for editors just starting out; I became a student there when I was a pretty new editor and didn’t know much, and I received a very newbie-friendly, comprehensive education in anti-vandalism. Draft appears to contain the use of LLM without having used AI

[edit]

Courtesy link: Draft:Darrel Moellendorf

My draft has been declined because it appears to contain text generated by a large language model. I have not used any kind of LLM though. On top of that it doesn't even contain any phrases that could seem like they've been created by AI. So I really don't understand why it was suspected of that. Happened after a couple of days of submitting it too. Resubmitting might lead to deletion it says. Do I have no other choice than to rewrite it? Hope someone can help. Thanks! PabloNormativeOrders (talk) 10:53, 29 September 2026 (UTC)Reply

What was the process used for the initial writing? CMD (talk) 10:58, 29 September 2026 (UTC)Reply
Retrieving information from the sources I have looked at. PabloNormativeOrders (talk) 10:56, 30 September 2026 (UTC)Reply
@PabloNormativeOrders Your draft contains symbols like 🎓 and 📝, which are weird if not added by an LLM. More to the point, the whole "Philosophy and Research" section is uncited to a source, which is against the policy at WP:biographies of living people. How are we to confirm that His work on climate justice defends an egalitarian version of cosmopolitanism. In this area he has been concerned to keep the importance of poverty eradication at the forefront of climate policy.? Mike Turnbull (talk) 12:02, 29 September 2026 (UTC)Reply
Thanks for the reply! Didn't think of the symbols, that makes sense! Your also right about the "Philosophy and Research" section, thanks for that! PabloNormativeOrders (talk) 10:43, 30 September 2026 (UTC)Reply
Rewriting a Wikipedia article you just finished writing is easy - you're already familiar with all the sources and you know more or less how you structured it and what it said. You couldn't NOT know those things. TooManyFingers (he/him · talk) 14:49, 29 September 2026 (UTC)Reply
You're right, rewriting shouldn't take too long even though I was quite happy about how I put the text together. Thanks for the reply! PabloNormativeOrders (talk) 10:47, 30 September 2026 (UTC)Reply
Quite a few software tools now are AI under the skin: users may not know. Grammarly, DeepL, "machine translation" programs can all be putting AI-style issues into your text. If you tell us your working pipeline we may be able to spot a problem of this kind. M kuhner (talk) 01:35, 30 September 2026 (UTC)Reply
Good point. Only used these tools to correctly put commas or whenever I was unsure if a German name should be displayed in Italics. I haven't used it to help me put the text together. Thanks for your reply though! PabloNormativeOrders (talk) 10:55, 30 September 2026 (UTC)Reply

Proofs of convergence of random variables

[edit]

Hi all, I just come across Proofs of convergence of random variables and it's not like anything I have seen on Wikipedia. It doesn't look like it can pass WP:GNG, but it sells itself as a "supplemental page". I know we have some supplemental pages like DABs, redirects, etc. which can have lower criteria for inclusion, but I have never seen one for maths before. Is this common and is there relevant guidelines for this? LkL-70547 (talk) 15:16, 29 September 2026 (UTC)Reply

@LkL-70547, that page has been around since 2009! According to the creation, it was moved out of its parent article (Convergence of random variables). You are free to submit a request for merge if you think the article is a useless fork and it should return to its parent. Phoenix ‣ Talk // Contributions 16:36, 29 September 2026 (UTC)Reply
Honestly I'm pretty tempted to just PROD or AfD it, unless there is a "notability math" guideline I am not aware of (frustratingly that's not what WP:NMATH is about :/). Since on first principle none of the material is sourced, meaning zero amount of them can be usable in the main article. LkL-70547 (talk) 18:04, 29 September 2026 (UTC)Reply
Hi @LkL-70547 and welcome to the Teahouse. I too haven't seen anything like this before. The article Convergence of random variables dates to the early years of Wikipedia when editors were just working out ways of handling things. It is not a useless fork; instead it is a way of including the information in the article. See this line from the article and click on the [proof] link.
  • Convergence in probability implies convergence in distribution.[proof]
These days we would probably write it using WP:SUMMARYSTYLE. StarryGrandma (talk) 16:49, 29 September 2026 (UTC)Reply
And there are more of these. See Category:Article proofs. StarryGrandma (talk) 16:51, 29 September 2026 (UTC)Reply
Interesting! Would this be analogous to a list article then? Since I think this falls under WP:AVOIDSPLIT on notability grounds, as I don't forsee it having a lot of independent secondary sigcov. LkL-70547 (talk) 18:01, 29 September 2026 (UTC)Reply
@LkL-70547, WP:AVOIDSPLIT is about creating standalone articles. This type of proof article started out as a subpage of the original article until it was realized that subpages weren't allowed. The best place to discuss this would be at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Mathematics. They have had various discussions on how to handle proofs, and at one time had a project Wikipedia:WikiProject Mathematics/Proofs. StarryGrandma (talk) 21:25, 29 September 2026 (UTC)Reply

I want to create a humor page but I am confused about how to

[edit]

Hi, I am Lutitium and I wanted to create a humor page like Association of Wikipedians Who Dislike Making Broad Judgments About the Worthiness of a General Category of Article, and Who Are in Favor of the Deletion of Some Particularly Bad Articles, but That Doesn't Mean They Are Deletionists but I am confused about how to do it. I have the general Idea, you have to go to meta wiki and make it there with the humour template but I have a sneaking suspicion that I may be wrong about that and I also have no idea about the details.

(In case I have made a spelling or grammar mistake, fix it)Anyways bye:D Lutitium (talk) 16:00, 29 September 2026 (UTC)Reply

Hi Lutitium. Humor pages can both be here and at meta. If it's here then the name should start with Wikipedia: or User:Lutitium/ so it doesn't count as an article, it should use {{Humor}}, it may be placed in Category:Wikipedia humor (not automatic from the template), and it could still be nominated for deletion if others find it inappropriate. Articles on Scribd

[edit]
Is it appropriate that numerous Wikipedia articles are on the Scribd website behind a paywall with the claim ""copyright © All Rights Reserved"?

I do not know where this situation should be posted for attention, so I post it here in the Teahouse.

I was doing research seeking a reference from Wikipedia article "John von Neumann". I happen to come across a link "https://www.scribd.com/document/661482564/John-von-Neumann". I was surprised to see that this "document" is a copy of the Wikipedia article "John von Neumann". Scribd, indicates that the user who uploaded it holds a "copyright © All Rights Reserved" on the document. It is behind Scribd's paywall which restricts Scribd's website requiring users to pay money or sign up for a paid subscription to read or view it.

The Scribd user that uploaded this Wikipedia article to Scribd is "thomas555". I looked to see thomas555's activity uploading articles to Scribd. thomas555 has uploaded 25 Wikipedia articles. In uploading these articles, thomas555 is making the claim that he is the author of each article

I tried to make a demand that these articles be removed from Scribed, however, I can only do it if I am "the exclusive rights holder or the duly authorized representative of the exclusive rights holder to submit a legally valid DMCA takedown notice."

What needs to be done to have Scribd remove these Wikipedia articles from their website? Is there some Wikipedia process that addresses what appears to be unauthorized use and a false claim of having a "copyright © All Rights Reserved"? Osomite 🐻 (hablemos) 19:58, 29 September 2026 (UTC)Reply

Text on Wikipedia is licensed under the Creative Commons CC BY-SA 4.0 license, which means anyone anywhere is free to do whatever they want with it. However, this license is provided under the stipulation that the origin of the text (i.e., Wikipedia) be clearly attributed, and that any modifications of the text be released under the same license.
The question is; does the "Copyright - All Rights Reserved" notice on the Scribd website refer to the content being displayed, or to the website itself? It's pretty normal for websites to make note of the latter, so just because that notice is visible on screen does not mean they're necessarily claiming to reserve rights to the content being displayed. However, if the article is behind a paywall, then they're probably still breaking the license; since it also stipulates You may not apply legal terms or technological measures that legally restrict others from doing anything the license permits (i.e., viewing, sharing and adapting the material); so if it's behind a paywall they are restricting that.
There doesn't seem to be any specific process for reporting this misuse to WMF or anything that I can find; WP:REUSE has guidance on it but no explanation of what to do if you find it being misused. Maybe it's worth shooting an email to the copyright complaints line info-en-c@wikimedia.org which is mostly for reporting copyright issues on wikipedia, but that's the closest I can find. Otherwise you could reach out to Scribd via email and explain that they're hosting content in violation of the license and see if they'll do anything about it. Athanelar (talk) 20:24, 29 September 2026 (UTC)Reply
The copyright in material published in Wikipedia is held by the editor who added it, not by the Wikimedia Foundation, so it is only that editor who has legal standing to challenge violation of it.
See WP:Mirrors and forks#Things you need to know. ColinFine (talk) 20:43, 29 September 2026 (UTC)Reply
Hi Osomite. Just going to add to what ColinFine posted above by pointing out that very few articles only one author. This is discussed in the "Things you need to know" section ColinFine linked to in their post. In a case like this, there might be strength in numbers. The offending party and Scribd might find it easier to brush off the complaint of one unknown Wikipedian, but emails received from multiple authors of the same article whose work is also being infringed upon might have more of an impact. Be advised, though, at some point depending how long the process drags out, you and others may be asked at some point to provide information on your real world identities if you pursue this out in the real world legal system; so, that might be also something worth consideration. -- Marchjuly (talk) 00:26, 30 September 2026 (UTC)Reply

It should be noted that it's doubtful many here would find fault with the administrator Docosong's actions here (and Pau Cabot and Docosong are two different pepole). You were asked about a conflict of interest, you described the subject as your client and yourself as a graphic and web designer and after off-Wiki information about your paid SEO editing were linked, you were blocked. You then reacted with a long, hostile block of text, and eventually had your talk page access and email access removed. There is no WMF project in which this kind of behavior is acceptable; I would recommend you take some time off to think about how you'd like to contribute to a project with a very different approach, and only then take only the proper avenues to appeal. Policy on Translating Titles of Books That are not Currently Translated into Target Language

[edit]

Hi, I'm working on translating some smaller articles from Belarusian to English. One of the authors I'm working on has relevant books not currently available in English translation. Is there a policy for renaming, translating, or using the original language name in these contexts? Should I default to my own translation of these title names? Should I default to the original language name in this context? Please let me know Wowthatsbroken (talk) 01:54, 30 September 2026 (UTC)Reply

Hi Wowthatsbroken. Before you proceed any further, you probably should take a look at Wikipedia:Translation (if you haven't already) and familiarize yourself with the boxes that need to be checked when translating articles from different Wikipedias into English. You should also take a look at WP:NBOOK and WP:OTHERLANGS for reference too because the fact that article exists on another Wikipedia doesn't automatically mean it should exist on English Wikipedia; a book would need to be shown to clearly be Wikipedia notable per English Wikipedia's notability guidelines for a stand-alone article to be written about it. As for the translating of titles, perhaps try asking at Wikipedia:WikiProject Books since this seems like something that probably has come up before, and a member of that WikiProject might be able to help sort things out for you. -- Marchjuly (talk) 02:17, 30 September 2026 (UTC)Reply

Should 'Daniel Larson' be added to the title blacklist?

[edit]

Daniel Larson is a well known harassment victim, similar to Christine Weston Chandler, who is already on the blacklist. I was wondering if he should be added to the blacklist as well? RandomNumber-x3lz (talk) 02:38, 30 September 2026 (UTC)Reply

Hi RandomNumber-x3lz. Weston Chandler is on MediaWiki:Titleblacklist. You can make a suggestion at MediaWiki talk:Titleblacklist. You could mention that administrators (not others) can see deleted pages here. PrimeHunter (talk) 03:11, 30 September 2026 (UTC)Reply
I meant should Daniel Larson be added to the title blacklist. Just wanted to clarify, as you may have misunderstood my original question. RandomNumber-x3lz (talk) 03:30, 30 September 2026 (UTC)Reply
Your second comma effectively reversed your intended meaning of that sentence, though fortuitously your second sentence clarified it because of the two persons' genders being different. Still, easy to misread in a hurry. Shows the importance of making sure grammar and punctuation are not ambiguous to others. {The poster formerly known as 87.81.230.195} ~2026-41275-62 (talk) 03:53, 30 September 2026 (UTC)Reply
I understood the question. Blacklist content is not decided here. I said where you can post and mentioned the Weston Chandler entry for context. It says .*weston.*chandler.* to catch some variations. PrimeHunter (talk) 04:30, 30 September 2026 (UTC)Reply
Sorry about that, should have read over it. I will look into making a suggestion. RandomNumber-x3lz (talk) 21:02, 30 September 2026 (UTC)Reply

Google certainly crawls Wikipedia articles to add information to its Google Knowledge Graph - I don't know whether it automatically adds information to its mapping database as well. ColinFine (talk) 15:07, 30 September 2026 (UTC)Reply

Move request

[edit]

I have seen many Move Requests on articles and entered into the discussion process toward consensus closing. However, I've never seen anything constructed like this. How can someone constructively enter into a discussion on a particular film, in this case: Jupiter's Wife when the under discussion link brings one to a Talk Page for a separate film all together: Talk:Naari (film) and asks to SUPPORT / OPPOSE on nearly 100 films all at once? To me, this makes absolutely no sense, and I can find no supporting WP policy guideline showing this to be acceptable. Can someone please explain? Thanks. Maineartists (talk) Maineartists (talk) 14:45, 30 September 2026 (UTC)Reply

It's because they're all tied together: each of them has the parenthetical (film), and Pppery is arguing that there's nothing non-film to disambiguate from. Since it's not really about content, it makes sense to bundle them together, otherwise we'd have to go to each one, separately, and make the same argument. See WP:TITLEDAB. 7amiþ = reform(solidarity).__init__(t, c) 14:58, 30 September 2026 (UTC)Reply
Hm. I guess. But this film alone: Jupiter's Wife shares the same title as Joe Chester's Best Irish album of 2020: Jupiter's Wife. So what am I missing here? Maineartists (talk) 15:59, 30 September 2026 (UTC)Reply
Does the album have its own article? If not, is it suspected to ever have one? If there's currently one article that uses "Jupiter's Wife", it makes sense not to use a disambiguator. —Tenryuu 🐲 ( 💬 • 📝 ) 16:02, 30 September 2026 (UTC)Reply

Is there any parallel to PLOTCITE for other media-adjacent topics?

[edit]

When I was just starting, I was pointed to WP:PLOTCITE and was quite surprised that we generally don't need to cite the work as it is presumed that the piece of media is the primary source. I have since been more careful when accusing an edit of being unsourced when patrolling recent changes.

However, what is the boundary of this convention? Does a cast and character list like this need a source? What about production companies and director credits (they are implicitly cited by the media's credits page)? I also see actors' filmography sections being often sparsely sourced, is that because the film they appeared in is the implicit source?

LkL-70547 (talk) 17:28, 30 September 2026 (UTC)Reply

@LkL-70547: Cast and characters, for a movie, should be cited. A basic list of characters in a novel or other written work does not need that. Apologies for the delay in you receiving a reply. Phoenix ‣ Talk // Contributions 11:24, 1 October 2026 (UTC)Reply

Bit of an odd scenario

[edit]

So, I found an article, Launch angle, and I don't know what precisely to do with it. Frankly, I would say it's an easy prod or AfD, as it reads like a dictionary and has only one source., however, I did some research and found out that there may (pending review) be enough information on launch angle as it pertains to sports to have an article on just that, instead. But, I'm not certain, I'd like to have consensus, however I don't know what venue to use. RfC doesn't seem necessary, and it's not AfD suitable because I'm not deleting, merging, redirecting, or moving. So, uh, what do I do and am I correct here? @FloblinTheGoblin,

Bennett Li11 (talk) 19:02, 30 September 2026 (UTC)Reply
There's a couple of options, @FloblinTheGoblin - you can have a crack at improving the article yourself, if you feel like doing so. You could also go to a relevant WikiProject and leave them a note to see if anyone else is interested in improving it. If you don't want to work on it and no one on the WikiProject takes it up, the last option is just to leave it as-is until another editor wanders by. Leaving links to the sources you've found on the talk page would be a kindness to future editors, if you choose not to work on it! Meadowlark (talk) 04:11, 1 October 2026 (UTC)Reply
I plan to improve it myself, but to me, the problem is that the current scope of the article (primarily launch angle as it results to telecommunications) is, I think, not notable, but I think that a different scope, launch angle as it relates to sports, may be. However, I don't feel comfortable with doing that unless I get some kind of approval, because I'm not certain. Maybe I'll take to AfD and ask for a draftify? In theory, yes, you could have someone make the page for you and you edit it. However, humor pages are meant to provide insight about Wikipedia, or at least be about it; the way to get that is learning and editing, at which point an account is highly useful. (This is, after all, an encyclopedia, not a humor piece collection.) It seems unlikely that a new or one-time editor could make a good humor essay (unless you're a long-timer already, like 87.81.230.195). 7amiþ = reform(solidarity).__init__(t, c) 15:26, 1 October 2026 (UTC)Reply

Hi Bennett Li11. Generally, a link to a discussion you want to reference tends to more than sufficient for others to figure out what you're asking about. Copying-and-pasting a discussion (particularly in Wikipedia markup) from one page to another can be tricky and might cause confusion: someone might mistake the imbedded content for an actual discussion and respond to it. Links tend to work just fine for something like this. -- Marchjuly (talk) 01:27, 1 October 2026 (UTC)Reply
Hi, Bennett Li11, and welcome. User:Melissasrojas29 is not blocked on any Wikipedia and has made only one edit, which was the initial one to their talk page asking why they were blocked. Any block would have been on a different account, so it would be best for them to log into and attempt an appeal from that account instead if they're referring to a block on them. Perfect4th (talk) 20:43, 30 September 2026 (UTC)Reply
Special:Log/Melissasrojas29 shows the account was created three minutes before complaining about being banned so yes, it was clearly not about that account which may have been created to evade a ban. PrimeHunter (talk) 20:57, 30 September 2026 (UTC)Reply

Wikipedia article question

[edit]

Hi! I'm a Dallas-based graphic designer and conceptual visual artist, and I'm researching whether I meet Wikipedia's notability requirements for a biographical article.

I have a conflict of interest because I am the subject, so I do not want to create or promote an article improperly. I'm looking for an uninvolved Wikipedia editor who could independently review my existing coverage and let me know whether the available reliable, independent sources appear sufficient for notability.

I have coverage from outlets including Glasstire, KERA News, Dallas Observer, DFWChild, and Dallas Innovates, along with additional institutional and editorial sources.

I can provide a source list with links and notes explaining which sources contain substantial coverage of my work. I'm not looking for favorable wording or special treatment—I'd simply like an independent assessment of whether an article would be appropriate and, if so, what the proper next step would be.

Thank you! ~2026-52634-16 (talk) 01:00, 1 October 2026 (UTC)Reply

@~2026-52634-16 Please have a look at WP:AUTOBIO and WP:PROUD. Very few people succeed at writing articles about themselves. The best advice you can get here is to keep working on your art as if you had never heard about Wikipedia, and let someone write an article about you of their own volition eventually, which is how most of our articles about people are written. Athanelar (talk) 01:10, 1 October 2026 (UTC)Reply
(edit conflict) Hi ~2026-52634-16. As long as you comply with relevant Wikipedia policies and guidelines like Wikipedia:Paid-contribution disclosure and Wikipedia:Conflict of interest, and you fully understand what you might be getting yourself into as explained in things like Wikipedia:Ownership of content, Wikipedia:What Wikipedia is not, Wikipedia:Autobiographies, and Wikipedia:An article about yourself isn't necessarily a good thing, then there's nothing preventing you from creating a Wikipedia:Drafts via Wikipedia:Articles for creation and submitting it for review when you think it's ready. There's no guarantee that it will be accepted, but it is an option available to you. You could also try Wikipedia:Requested articles, but that seems to move pretty slowly. Another idea would be to ask about this at Wikipedia:WikiProject Visual arts to see whether any member of that Wikipedia:WikiProject might be able to give you a rough assessment of your Wikipedia:Notability. Someone here at the Teahouse could do the same if they want, but the visual arts WikiProject might be better place for a more detailed discussion of the Wikipedia notability of a visual artist and the type of sources typically considered OK for establishing notability. -- Marchjuly (talk) 01:16, 1 October 2026 (UTC)Reply
Please also check out WP:NOLLM and WP:LLMCOMM before you start writing, if you choose to do so. Suðurhafsljósæta (talk) 09:44, 1 October 2026 (UTC)Reply
Both of the above responses are true, even though they seem nearly opposite.
To sum up: You're allowed to try, and there's lots of useful advice available and explanations of what's required, but your chance of success is extremely low because few people meet the requirements and almost everyone ignores the most important parts of the advice. Motivation and explanation for the WP:NOTNEWS policy?

[edit]

I have already read the rest of the What Wikipedia is not article. Most of its sections/sub-policies make sense or are easily motivated; for instance, I wouldn't want a section on the article for Zermelo-Fraenkael set theory about a 100 true theorems of ZFC, so I can easily motivate WP:INDISCRIMINATE, and if I recall correctly, WP:ORIGINALITY (and the prohibitions against original research in general) come from preventing cranks and crackpots from using Wikipedia as a place to share their potentially revolutionary contributions to physics. However, I don't think I've (personally) seen a scenario that would justify WP:NOTNEWS. I'd also like to add that Wikipedia's main page literally has a section for "in the news" (as well as the existence of the "current events" WikiProject and corresponding Portal); how would this not contradict the NOTNEWS policy? I have been inspired to ask this question after seeing Wikipedians use this policy to justify deleting Lake Ontario naming dispute; from my perspective, the article didn't seem objectionable at all because it has multiple independent sources. PicoMath (talk) 02:36, 1 October 2026 (UTC)Reply

@PicoMath Well, that section offers a couple of factors that differentiate us quite importantly from a news outlet:
1. We explicitly forbid original research, whereas that's exactly what news outlets trade in. So one way to use NOTNEWS is to say that we don't want Wikipedians going out interviewing people and gathering firsthand information after an event to put it in their article.
2. One of the criteria for event articles is lasting significance. As an encyclopedia, we want all of the information here to be as important and as useful in a week and in a month and in 10 years and in 50 years as it is now. Philosophically this is completely different from a news outlet, which by its very nature wants to report on news: things that are happening and important right now, regardless of any predicted future importance.
Then there's WP:NOTWHOSWHO and WP:NOTGOSSIP which I think are fairly self explanatory. (News outlets often give some coverage to otherwise-unremarkable individuals simply because they were involved in notable events, or give coverage to otherwise-unremarkable events because someone notable like a celebrity was involved, but Wikipedia doesn't. Notability isn't inherited like that) Athanelar (talk) 09:45, 1 October 2026 (UTC)Reply
Regarding the Front page's 'In the news' section: note that this is intended to highlight an existing (and good quality) article about a subject that is currently being reported on by news media. We don't insert a new event into 'In the news' and then (or simultaneously) write an article about it, although major new events tend pretty rapidly to get substantial (and hopefully good quality) articles. {The poster formerly known as 87.81.230.195} ~2026-41275-62 (talk) 18:12, 1 October 2026 (UTC)Reply

Mass CfD/S?

After most userbox categories were moved recently, I have noticed some that have been left unmoved as they were not tagged, or another issue (ex. I did this for one of the categories I created, but there are far too many to do for this without flooding it (and my contribs), or being repetitive. Is there any other way to do this, or... what? ⚙ Crash >> Organhaver ( it / he | talk to me, maybe? ) 05:25, 1 October 2026 (UTC)Reply

Türkiye and WP:COMMONNAME in articles

[edit]
WP:COMMONNAME

Hello Wikipedia Teahouse,

I have just witnessed at least ten new accounts pop up, create userpages that state they're from Abdullah Gül University in Türkiye, and then change "Turkey" to "Türkiye" in an article.

This:

1. Is rather strange, and

2. leaves me wondering whether this is acceptable. Does WP:COMMONNAME, or a variant of it, apply to the content of articles?

I've seen similar with people changing Gulf of Mexico and Lake Ontario in article bodies to what the U.S government calls them too, and have not reverted because, from what I can tell, WP:COMMONNAME is specifically for article titles. crtbob@talk:~$ ls contribs 11:26, 1 October 2026 (UTC)Reply

Incorrect definition of Zionism

Is arguing against damp of information given by user in afd illegal? Shaymmm (talk) 15:29, 1 October 2026 (UTC)Reply

Hello, @Shaymmm, and welcome to the Teahouse.
I'm afraid that I have no idea what you are asking. I see that the article was nominated for deletion, and the result was "keep".
I see that in the discussion you used the phrase "damp of information", which you have used above. When I saw it above, I assumed that it was a typo, and was trying to work out what you might have meant to say. How having seen in in the discussion, I have the beginnings of an idea what it might mean, but not a clear idea (and the comments indicate that I am not the only one who finds "damp of information" hard to understand).
But I still have no idea what you are asking above. ColinFine (talk) 16:28, 1 October 2026 (UTC)Reply
Hello, @ColinFine,The user in afd told it was damp of informatiob. When i asked this is wrong to tell as damp of information another user wrote that "Don't argue with people about their !votes, please. Either present actual policy arguments or new information, or let it go and trust the closing admin can tell a weak argument when they see one.".So do i have no rights to tell this damp of information is useless criteria for deletion? Shaymmm (talk) 17:36, 1 October 2026 (UTC)Reply
and is damp of information criteria to delete this article? Shaymmm (talk) 17:38, 1 October 2026 (UTC)Reply
I am asking this question because if my article is nominated for deletion and someone tells it is because of damp of information, then will it be considered for deletion Shaymmm (talk) 17:39, 1 October 2026 (UTC)Reply
Do you by any chance mean 'information dump'? Please note that 'damp' and 'dump' are, in English, completely unrelated words. Hope this helps. {The poster formerly known as 87.81.230.195} ~2026-41275-62 (talk) 18:22, 1 October 2026 (UTC)Reply
No,I didn't know but he wrote dump information Shaymmm (talk) 18:24, 1 October 2026 (UTC)Reply
Ah, OK, I've now actually read the AfD discussion. The term "damp of information" was introduced by Geschichte: in the context of the discussion and the article concerned, "a dump of information" does make sense, so I can only assume "damp" was a typo for "dump". Perhaps Geschichte will come here to confirm (or refute) this, or you could ask them on their Talk page.
I'm not aware that an article being "a dump of information" is formally proscribed in our guidelines, but (in any piece of writing) it is clearly not a good thing to be: it suggests an unstructured string of facts with no structure to it, which would not read coherently and would be unnecessarily difficult to use.
Many drafts, of course, are probably "dumps of information" in their early stages of development, while the drafter is still collecting sources. This ought to be rectified before the draft is submitted for consideration, and having looked at the article's state before the AfD nomination was made, I can see elements of it. Hope this helps. {The poster formerly know as 87.81.230.195} ~2026-41275-62 (talk) 01:29, 2 October 2026 (UTC)Reply

Feedback on sourcing for a COI draft before AfC submission

[edit]

Hello. I have written Draft:Krieshen Ramkhelawan about myself. I have declared my conflict of interest on my user page and on the draft's talk page, and I will not move it to the main space myself; I intend to submit it through Articles for Creation.

Before submitting, I would appreciate neutral feedback from experienced editors on two points:

  1. Do the independent sources in the draft (mainly De Ware Tijd, a profile from May 2026 and a 2024 report; the Government of Suriname news site; Waterkant.Net; Dagblad Suriname; Anton de Kom University of Suriname) appear sufficient to meet WP:GNG or WP:NBIO, or should I wait for more in-depth coverage?
  2. Is there any wording in the draft that reads as promotional and should be removed or rephrased?

Most sources are in Dutch, as they are Surinamese media. I am happy to provide translations of the relevant passages if that helps. Thank you for your time. Krieshen.Ramkhelawan (talk) 16:11, 1 October 2026 (UTC)Reply

De Ware Tijd seems to be a reliable source, but it is not independent, because they are interviewing you; this basically makes you a co-author of those articles. TooManyFingers (he/him · talk) 21:15, 1 October 2026 (UTC)Reply

species list with a species that is a synonym of another

i just finished completing the species list in Geometra, and one of the sources i used (inaturalist) lists Geometra munitata as a species. i saw that in the preview, the link to it was blue instead of red like i was expecting, so i clicked on it and it redirected to Xanthorhoe decoloraria. since G. munitata is just a synonym of X. decoloraria, should i keep G. munitata in the species list? -a logged out .sstanleycaris ~2026-52604-06 (talk) 19:06, 1 October 2026 (UTC)Reply

ok, thank you sstanleycaris (SHOO!) 21:32, 1 October 2026 (UTC)Reply
I'd recommend verifying the rename, and if it is current and correct, then X. decoloraria/G. munitata should not be in a list of Geometra species as it is no longer considered to be part of that genus.
You could consider "species no longer considered part of this genus" as a list, especially if there are several of them, but I personally don't think it's necessary. M kuhner (talk) 16:00, 2 October 2026 (UTC)Reply

If I found the pw for a long-abandoned account, is it okay if I still use TAs?

[edit]
  • I got way too into Wikipedia for ~14 months 20 years ago and abandoned my account cold-turkey. Editing was not good for my mental health. (I wasn't contentious at all IIRC, I was just obsessive, completionist, and kept staying up until 4AM writing pages).
  • Recently I learned that trolls break into old WP accounts to make trouble, and I wondered if my old account was using one of my re-used, long-since pwned passwords from before the days of ubiquitous PW managers.
  • It was. I logged into WP to change the PW to something unique and harder to crack.
  • Now I worry that it's technically socking to ever use a TA. For context, in the last 20 years I've maybe used TAs or IP accounts to edit talk pages something like 3 or 4 times at most, probably only to request edits for unequivocal, absolutely inarguable vandalism. And none of those edits were in places where I used to edit regularly and consider myself a subject matter expert.

I don't want to go back to that old account; even looking at it and contemplating blanking the user page and requesting a name change gives me anxiety. Writing this teahouse question gives me anxiety! I also don't want to break any rules. Now that I know I could log into the old account, does that mean I musn't use a TA ever? I really don't intend ever to use TAs for anything other than once-a-decade edit requests when I notice a serious problem on an unmonitored page. ~2026-52806-50 (talk) 21:57, 1 October 2026 (UTC)Reply

See WP:ALTACC. Using alternate accounts, including TAs, is completely permissible. The charge of sockpuppetry requires that the alternate account is being used for rulebreaking purposes like giving the false impression of support in a discussion, anonymous vandalism ("bad hand" socking), block evasion, etc. Athanelar (talk) 22:02, 1 October 2026 (UTC)Reply

IMDb is not a reliable source and in most cases cannot be used as a reference to support content in the body of an article. However, a link to an IMDb page can appear in the External links section. See WP:CITINGIMDB and WP:IMDB-EL. CodeTalker (talk) 02:39, 2 October 2026 (UTC)Reply

Request for independent feedback

[edit]

I am working on Draft:Leon du Preez.

I have disclosed that I have a professional affiliation with the subject and Encounter Church, so I have a COI.

I have not yet submitted the draft to AfC.

I would appreciate an uninvolved editor checking whether the current sourcing appears sufficient for WP:BIO, and whether the draft has any obvious BLP, NPOV, promotional-tone or citation problems before I submit it.

I am not asking for expedited approval, only independent feedback.

Thank you so much. BrainStormer75 (talk) 04:53, 2 October 2026 (UTC)Reply

@BrainStormer75 A brief glance shows that much of the content of the draft is based on interviews with its subject, so not independent of him. You need about three decent sources which meet the golden rule and it would help the AfC reviewers if you commented at the top of the draft which ones they are. They are the ones that need to convince reviewers that WP:NBIO is met. Mike Turnbull (talk) 09:48, 2 October 2026 (UTC)Reply
Thank you, Mike. That is helpful. I will identify the strongest independent secondary sources at the top of the draft for AfC reviewers and will continue looking for additional sources that meet WP:NBIO before submitting. I appreciate the clarification. ~~~~ BrainStormer75 (talk) 20:14, 2 October 2026 (UTC)Reply
@BrainStormer75 One of the main problems is right at the first sentence of the article. If we need to use an interview to determine what his name is and what he does, the article takes a sharp turn toward being a self-promotion piece. We need to see him identified and introduced by reporters who didn't interview him and who don't necessarily support his message, but who still consider him worth writing a major story about. Advice on finding elusive sources

[edit]

I recently tried to edit Texas Senate to add the roles of the Republican and Democratic caucus chairs as unofficial party leaders. I was unable to find a source, but made the edit anyway because:

  • the article lists the current caucus chairs (Tan Parker and Carol Alvarado) as the majority leader and minority leader, even though I haven't seen them referred to by those titles
  • the Texas House of Representatives article has a similar statement about caucus chairs in that chamber, also unsourced
  • I know the fact to be true from personal knowledge

Understandably, though, the edit was reverted by @Nrlref013 on the grounds that it was unsourced and did not comply with the verifiability policy. They suggested that I ask for advice here.

I did a little digging for a source that mentions that the Senate caucus chairs play the role of party leader, but couldn't readily find one. I plan to do some more research in my spare time and maybe see if the local public library has a book on Texas politics that would contain the claim. Do you all have any other advice for how to find sources for claims you just know are true but can't easily source? MetroFjord (talk) 05:04, 2 October 2026 (UTC)Reply

Hello, MetroFjord. Claims you just know are true (how do you know that?) but can't easily source must, as a matter of policy, be kept out of encyclopedia articles. You can maintain a personal sandbox with this content as you continue searching for reliable sources. As for finding sources, writing more detailed and specific search queries may be useful, as well as good old fashioned library searches of paper sources. Countless reliable sources are still not available online. In California where I live, the California State Library has a massive collection of sources related to the state legislature. I assume that Texas has a similar library. Cullen328 (talk) 09:50, 2 October 2026 (UTC)Reply
See WP:LIBRARY for places where you can find, or get help finding, sources. You may also get help at your local public library (or your school or college library, if you are a student). Remember that paper sources, as well as those found online, can be used. Help:Find sources also has some good tips.
You might also find WP:Referencing for beginners useful. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits; 10:18, 2 October 2026 (UTC)Reply
archive.org can be useful. You can ask an AI of your choice a question like "do Republican and Democratic caucus chairs function as unofficial party leaders?" and see what sources it comes up with, but BE VERY AWARE that a lot of what you will get will be crap from the WP-POV, if related to your question at all. But sometimes you can get a usable source that way. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 10:36, 2 October 2026 (UTC)Reply

Writing better drafts

[edit]

Does anyone here have guides for writing better drafts? I have been involved in 5 drafts (give or take) for 13 days, adding more reliable & notable sources, and not a single one of them got accepted. I can't stop thinking about drafts in my head. I am burned out and stressed from the constant thinking and the worry that I won't ever get a draft accepted.

Thanks. |)are2|_eap (Talk) 05:37, 2 October 2026 (UTC)Reply

The draft you've edited most recently, Dare2Leap, is Draft:Mumbo Jumbo (YouTuber). This has been declined several times for use of an LLM. How can you write a better draft? Unsurprisingly, don't use an LLM. And more generally: Start by checking that your proposed subject is "notable" as defined by and for Wikipedia and that you'll be able to demonstrate this. Then read reliable sources, taking notes. Then draft the draft. And then copyedit your draft, again and again. (Do this over a period of several days.) And only after you've done all that, submit it. -- Hoary (talk)WWU 👍︎ 06:25, 2 October 2026 (UTC)Reply
@Dare2Leap There's pretty good advice in the essay WP:backwards. Mike Turnbull (talk) 09:51, 2 October 2026 (UTC)Reply
@Dare2Leap From a different angle - the thing that's going wrong is you're trying to find sources that YOU call "reliable & notable". Forget about that, because it doesn't help. The important thing is to find out what kind of sources Wikipedia requires. Wikipedia's definitions are very different from yours. TooManyFingers (he/him · talk) 05:34, 3 October 2026 (UTC)Reply
I base my opinion on Wikipedia guidelines, such as WP:GNG, WP:SIGCOV, but sometimes I extrapolate based on my intepretations of the Wikipedia rules that I read, such as the number of paragraphs/words needed for something to count as notable. And maybe that is what is wrong with me? But I am still learning. Just recently, I read about WP:100WORDS, which would've been really useful had I read it when creating drafts.
I have given up on making new drafts until I better understand the notability guidelines and have shifted to improving existing articles.
Thanks. |)are2|_eap (Talk) 06:19, 3 October 2026 (UTC)Reply

Undue instructional language

[edit]

The article Graph structure theorem has this sentence in its introduction: "Its proof is very long and involved." This does not seem like a thing that should be noted, especially without any secondary sources one can point to.

However, I am unsure of what I should cite as a reason for the change. Is this MOS:INSTRUCT, WP:NPOV, or something else?

Thanks! OpFez (talk) 08:57, 2 October 2026 (UTC)Reply

Hello, OpFez. There is nothing wrong with the statement per se. The problem is the lack of a source. However, a source is not required in the lead section if the content is discussed and properly referenced later in the body of the article. You can remove it if there is no source anywhere in the article and if you cannot find a reliable source that makes that observation. Cullen328 (talk) 09:58, 2 October 2026 (UTC)Reply
@OpFez This is a case where the WP:LEAD of the article is brief and cites no sources directly. However, it explicitly states which sources later in the article do give the proof. On the grounds of WP:NPOV you could remove the "Its proof is very long and involved" part but this may be in the sky is blue territory! Mike Turnbull (talk) 09:58, 2 October 2026 (UTC)Reply

Hi, I'm a fairly new editor and could use a second opinion. I made several separate edits to Battle of Saint-Omer that got reverted by Johnbod, an experienced editor. The edits were fixing a pp= vs p= formatting issue in the citations, I corrected each reference as I found it instead of batching them into one edit because of warning tag, which ended up looking like a burst of changes. I posted an explanation on the article talk page Talk:Battle of Saint-Omer,addressing why I made those changes, but it's been 11 days with no reply. I've also left a note for my mentor, but their user page says they're on a break, so I'm not sure if or when I'll hear back from them. Is it reasonable to follow up directly on the other editor's user talk page at this point, or should I keep waiting? Did I go too far at some point? PalimpsestEditor (talk) 18:36, 2 October 2026 (UTC)Reply

My mentor got back to me, even though they're away, and suggested I reach out directly to Johnbod on his talk page rather than asking through them. I'll do that next.
Part of my hesitation in following up was that Johnbod has been editing for a long time, so I wanted to check I wasn't doing something wrong before going directly to them. PalimpsestEditor (talk) 22:10, 2 October 2026 (UTC)Reply
There is nothing wrong with doing something 'wrong' if you simply haven't learned how to do it 'right' yet.
Wikipedia (like life) is very large and complicated, and nobody is expected to learn how to do everything perfectly correctly before trying to do it; having somebody else correct a mistaken attempt is a normal part of learning how to do things 'right', and does not carry any stigma, unless one continues to repeat the mistake after being told how not to make it. Also, 'right' and 'wrong' is sometimes a matter of interpretation, or dependant on context.
The Wikipedia Project is intentionally co-operative and collaborative, and any user more experienced in doing a particular thing should be happy to explain why doing it in a particular way is correct, or even merely better. I'm sure Johnbod (who may also be pausing their editing and may not have seen your Article Talk page message) would not mind if you politely asked on their talk page why they reverted you. {The poster formerly known as 87.81.230.195} ~2026-41275-62 (talk) 22:48, 2 October 2026 (UTC)Reply

Hi This is a repost since my old post did not get answered

the category, Category:Pending template and disambiguation AfC submissions doesnt work. Based on the talk page this has been broken for at least 5 and a half years, disambig pages and template pages aren't getting added to the category

as I saw in the old thread, PrimeHunter pointed out the submisison must have |type=template or |type=dab to be added, which I would assume are auto added for AfC pages that use the disambig category (I'm not too sure if a template category exists, never checked) or ones that have Template: or (disambiguation) in the title, but I can confirm the are not auto added thank you ~2026-48026-60 (talk) 19:13, 2 October 2026 (UTC)Reply

was this article automatically set to ECP. Is there a place to request a downgrade to Semi? Please see Talk:Flydubai Flight 1073#c-YourLocalZakkFromSomewhere-20261002142900-Why is this on ECP? Dw31415 (talk) 21:49, 2 October 2026 (UTC)Reply

Unfortunately Flydubai Flight 1073 is a Wikipedia:Contentious topics, article relates to the Arab–Israeli conflict and cannot be downgraded to Semi Protection. Untamed1910 (talk) 21:59, 2 October 2026 (UTC)Reply

Translating quotes

[edit]

Hello friends. What is the current guidance on machine translation and/or where might I ask for help with human help with an Italian-to-English translation? I might want to use a couple of direct quotes from this Italian-language article and I know to include the original language in the reference but after that...help? jengod (talk) 00:51, 3 October 2026 (UTC)Reply

The current guidance is at WP:MACHINETRANSLATION and WP:LLMTRANSLATE. In summary; Wikipedia consensus is that an unedited machine translation, left as a Wikipedia article, is worse than nothing. Machine translation should be used as an assistive tool for people who are already proficient in both languages and can verify that the output of the machine translation is accurate.
If you want human help with translation, the WP:EMBASSY has a list of English-speaking editors proficient in various other languages who can be contacted for help with those languages. Athanelar (talk) 02:20, 3 October 2026 (UTC)Reply
Thank you Athanelar! This is what I was looking for but I cornered myself in a dead-end before I found it. I will read, and save all these links on my personal collection of "how wikipedia work" documentation. Thank you v much for taking the time.

Hi, anonymous editor, and welcome! The Teahouse is just a name picked to indicate the atmosphere this page is intended to convey; it's a somewhat more casual place to ask Wikipedia editing questions than some other noticeboards on Wikipedia. You could just as easily consume coffee while you ask questions at the Teahouse or variations of that nature – the particular drink matters less than the editing help. Do you have any questions about editing Wikipedia we can help with? Best, Perfect4th (talk) 02:28, 3 October 2026 (UTC)Reply

Punctuation

[edit]
I don't know if this belongs here, but: Does this seem like correct punctuation?

I just edited the article Charles Addams and fixed punctuation in the Personal life section of the article. Does this seem like correct punctuation?

  • Original: By April 1943 shortly after the death of Addams mother, the couple were engaged
  • Current version by me: By April 1943, shortly after the death of Addams's mother, the couple were engaged Gaming Fan 23 (talk) 02:43, 3 October 2026 (UTC)Reply
I am asking this because someone reverted my edit where I fixed punctuation on another page and they said the rendered sentence was nonsensical, and I am now always paranoid that my punctuation fixing edits will get reverted as a result. Gaming Fan 23 (talk) 02:56, 3 October 2026 (UTC)Reply
The structure of a sentence as a whole is a bit odd (and was before you edited, I should add). I'd probably just rephrase the whole sentence to something like "The couple were engaged by April 1943, shortly after the death of Addam's mother." I'm not entirely convinced the death of Addam's mother is sufficiently relevant to that particular sentence so as to warrant inclusion in it, but that's a separate matter. I almost forgot to add: Welcome to the Teahouse, Gaming Fan 23! Perfect4th (talk) 03:05, 3 October 2026 (UTC)Reply
Hello Gaming Fan 23, for this particular case, I would say your version is definitely clearer, but whole-sale rephrasing would probably work better as Perfect4th said.
In general though, you can always open a discussion with the person reverting your edit and ask them to elaborate. I actually got involved in a disagreement about a comma on Among Us (TV series) before, but we managed to talk it out . You can always boldly change first and discuss later, as outlined by WP:BRD. Article On Poetry Seems Incorrect But Conflict Of Interest

[edit]

Tough one here, I'm 74 year old guy - not the best at this. Marty Watt. Asking about the article on Performance Poetry Some dates are wrong. But I think it's a conflict of interest for me to make any edits or changes. I was a "Performance Poet" back in the Nineteen Seventies and Eighties, the general concept in that area is that I was the first. Seems like it, but who knows. I have all the Mainstream Press reviews with the dates etc and whatever would be needed. There is an article / page about ME already on Wikipedia Marty Watt . Strange that there's an article on me as a "Performance Poet" but I'm mentioned once in passing - my name misspelled as "Watts" not how it is: "Watt." And it's hard to imagine what the brief mention of me even means : "Marty Watts was connected to the term performance poetry in 1976 through his physical expression of recited poetic works." "connected?" "to the term performance poetry?" "through his physical expression of recited poetic works." I simply WAS a "Performance Poet," I wrote my own poems to be performed from memory for a live audience. The definition of the modern term: Performance Poetry. The 1976 mentioned refers to the article about me in The Washington Post that year. Earlier dates - 1973, 1975 documented in reviews of my shows from the Philadelphia Evening Bulletin aren't mentioned for some reason. Even 1976 puts my work far earlier than anyone else, but I did start earlier than that. The mention of me was just recently added. It was all I got after months of working with a mentor and supplying them with all documentation asked for. . . . Best I can tell, the problem here is the conflict of interest: I would be part of any corrections, and I would be the one suggesting the corrections. Other problem is that no one has been on the "Talk" section for two or three years.

Is there ANYTHING that can done ?

Thanks for any help, Marty Marty Watt (talk) 10:22, 3 October 2026 (UTC)Reply

Hello, @Marty Watt, and welcome to the Teahouse.
If there are reliable sources for the earlier use of the term, then it can almost certainly be added. Thank you for your concern about conflict of interest - I suppose if it was your performances that they were about, that is a COI. In which case, I would advise you use the edit request wizard to create a {{COI edit request}} on the talk page, which will come to the notice of a wider set of editors than those who watch that page. Be as specific as you can in your request, and cite the sources fully. ColinFine (talk) 11:11, 3 October 2026 (UTC)Reply
Problem is NO ONE watches that page. Only help it would be to me is that when Google is asked about "Performance Poetry," "Spoken Word," etc my name doesn't come up - because Wikipedia is what the Internet scours. Fascinating. What happens when things / arts like this just get so forgotten? Does any misinformation just stay how it is? I guess I could try to find someone halfway knowledgeable about that time and subject. Marty Watt (talk) 11:46, 3 October 2026 (UTC)Reply
Hello again, @Marty Watt.
I perhaps didn't make it clear: if you use the {{COI edit request}} template, then it will be on a quite separate list of edits, which will be seen by people who patrol that list. It may take time for them to get to it, but they will.
But the other side of the question is that, unfortunately, your personal knowledge may not be used in any Wikipedia article unless it is verified by a reliable published source. Please see the essay WP:verifiability, not truth. ColinFine (talk) 12:43, 3 October 2026 (UTC)Reply
Yes, "verified" by newspaper articles reviews. Mainstream press: Washington Post, Philadelphia Evening Bulletin, more. Just to be clear: would they be reliable published etc sources? But is it that if it's ME that presents them - that makes them MY knowledge and therefore disqualifies them ? Yes, I just checked: I did mention in my original post / question that I have it all documented: the published sources etc, the Wikipedia article already about me. "Seems like it, but who knows. I have all the Mainstream Press reviews with the dates etc and whatever would be needed. There is an article / page about ME already on Wikipedia Marty Watt ." I kind of understand how weird it would be for me just to saying stuff off the top of my head. I just want to do what's right, the right way, and only get done what can be done. Nothing special or extra. Marty Watt (talk) 12:57, 3 October 2026 (UTC)Reply
I have fixed the spelling issue.
The most important thing, if you request further changes or additions is to supply reliable, independent sources
While you're here, you may find WP:About you useful. We would particularly appreciate a recording of your spoken voice, as explained there. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits; 11:54, 3 October 2026 (UTC)Reply
"Reliable Sources?" Mainstream newspaper articles and reviews? I've supplied them - got me nowhere except my name misspelled. Are newspapers not what you mean? Washington Post, Philadelphia Evening Bulletin - now gone - I have the archived reviews, others if needed. I must have something wrong about sources. Yes, there are recordings. Best is 1972 event with Patti Smith, first the public saw "Performance Poetry" the style of verse and the memorized delivery, and Where as Patti Smith takes the stage, she says "I'm from the old school where we READ our poems." I even stared (one of four principles) in a major film : Almost You, early eighties, where I get to perform a whole poem. Marty Watt (talk) 12:40, 3 October 2026 (UTC)Reply
Supplied them where? And yes, newspapers are fine.
As I said, I have fixed the spelling issue. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits; 12:47, 3 October 2026 (UTC)Reply
Sorry, @Marty Watt, I added my last reply before I saw this. Yes, major newspapers are exactly what we mean. But which of those sources specifically talked in some depth about "performance poetry", or "performance poet"? If they did not use the phrase, then they are not relevant to this particular article.
But if they used the phrase in passing, but did not talk about it as a subject, they would support your claim of an earlier use of the phrase. ColinFine (talk) 12:47, 3 October 2026 (UTC)Reply
I'll have to look and see which ones say specifically "Performance Poet," "Performance Poet." These articles were supplied mostly for the dates - verifying me "first," or one of the earliest. Many years - a decade before anyone else mentioned there. There are later mainstream press articles that use the term "Performance Poet," etc and talk of me specifically as being the first. The issue of the term "performance poetry" is very strange in this subject and in this Wikipedia Article. MANY people are cited throughout the article: all the back to way in the past and others long after - ie: SLAM that in no way use the term "Performance Poetry." That specific term did not exist till 1972, interview - Carryout Magazine, Victor Bockris and Patti Smith - though Patti Smith was not technically a "Performance Poet" yet - she was energetic but still reading her poems off a page. Performance Poetry came to be strictly considered poetry written to be performed, memorized, and the performed live for a live audience. Many people throughout history have done variations on this - ie: Oral Tradition etc, The Beats but the term itself (the actual title of the article) was never used till 1972 and soon came to apply only to certain artists mostly in the Seventies and Eighties. Soo, it morphed into things like SLAM and Spoken Word. Then there is the debate of whether music effects the definition "Performance Poetry." Patti Smith before and after she started memorizing her poems performed with an electric guitar behind her. I performed with no music - just me and the poems. Things like that are all debatable. I think later on almost all SLAM events ban music accompaniment. The rise of Rap later also confused the whole "Performance Poetry" with or without music issue.
Reviews of me - if they don't use the term specifically make it clear that I'm performing poems live in a theater from memory with no music and that it is some kind of VERY new thing. The articles go out of their way to paint my shows as unique also because of the large theatrical settings, large audiences - different in their words from anything else that might have happened in the past in bookstores and coffee houses. In that way, even more documenting me than many people mentioned in the article. The Performance Poetry article as it now exists is more about something called The Oral Tradition - not anything called "Performance Poetry." Homer - the ancient Greek storytellers were never referred to as "Performance Poets," neither were The Beats. It really is a weird thing having to do with poetry. Needs a rigorous defining. I just invented it (allegedly) and did it, but I'm not an academic. Marty Watt (talk) 13:29, 3 October 2026 (UTC)Reply
