Viet-Muong is clearly a branch of Vietic. It's thought that the two languages split during the Chinese Emperial era. I'm replacing the Ethnologue classification with one that recognizes this, and moving the article from Viet-Muong to Vietic. "voọc": likely originally meant all species of monkeys, now restricted to some species of monkeys; "khái" Nghệ An dialectal word for "tiger"; "cúi" archaic, now almost obsolete word for pig, still used in North Central (Bắc Trung Bộ).Erminwin (talk) 02:41, 8 May 2020 (UTC)Reply

@Erminwin: Well, as far as I know, "cúi" is completely obsolete actually; I'm not aware of any dialect that still uses cúi as the normal word for "pig", although it does live on in compounds such as "cá cúi".PhanAnh123 (talk) 03:16, 8 May 2020 (UTC)Reply

Classification contradiction

The Languages section begins The discovery that Vietnamese was a Mon–Khmer language, and that its tones were a regular reflection of non-tonal features in the rest of the family, is considered a milestone in the development of historical linguistics. This doesn't reconcile with the move away from academic support for a Mon-Khmer family, which is missing from the language family hierarchies at Khmer language and Vietnamese language, and isn't mentioned among any of the schemes discussed in the Classification section. So the two sections should be refactored, with Mon-Khmer being mentioned as one hypothesis but with it also indicated that it's now generally considered outmoded.
