Comment: Resubmitting after a sourcing rewrite. Every statement is now cited to independent secondary coverage (VentureBeat, InfoQ, heise online, InfoWorld, The New Stack, Search Engine Land, Search Engine Journal). Primary sources are used only where they support a body's own stated position, per WP:ABOUTSELF. I have a conflict of interest, disclosed on the talk page, and have flagged it inline for the reviewer's judgement. Removed: two arXiv preprints, a vendor interview, a personal blog, a routine CVE listing, and a forward-looking release table that rested on a primary tracker. WebMCP is a proposed web API for exposing website functionality to artificial intelligence agents. A website can define actions, known as tools, together with descriptions and structured input parameters. An agent using a compatible browser can then invoke those tools rather than interacting with the site solely through mouse clicks, keyboard input, screenshots or the page's document structure.[1][2]
The specification is developed in the W3C Web Machine Learning Community Group. Its editors include Brandon Walderman of Microsoft and Khushal Sagar and Dominic Farolino of Google. As of September 2026, WebMCP is published as a Draft Community Group Report and is not a W3C Standard or part of the W3C Standards Track.[3]
Development and implementation
[edit]Google announced an origin trial for WebMCP in Chrome 149 in June 2026. The trial allowed developers to experiment with websites exposing structured actions to browser-based agents.[2]
In August 2026, OpenAI added support for WebMCP site tools to the built-in browser in its ChatGPT desktop application. Supported webpages can make actions available to ChatGPT Work and Codex. Availability depends on the user's account, model and workspace.[4]
Design
[edit]WebMCP defines both declarative and imperative ways to expose tools. The declarative API is based on annotated HTML forms, while the imperative API allows JavaScript functions to be registered through the browser's modelContext interface. Tools can include a name, description and structured input schema.[2]
This gives agents a structured interface to actions that would otherwise require interpreting and operating the user interface. The tools run within the context of the webpage and can use the site's existing application logic and user session.[2][4]
Applications and limitations
[edit]Travel industry publication PhocusWire discussed WebMCP as a way to make existing booking interfaces accessible to browser-based agents without requiring travel companies to redesign their backend systems. Industry participants interviewed by the publication said that underlying APIs would still be needed for functions such as inventory control, pricing logic and transaction integrity.[5]
Security is also a consideration. The WebMCP specification discusses risks including prompt injection, misleading tool descriptions, privacy leakage and inappropriate execution of consequential actions.[3] Guidance reported by InfoQ recommends identifying untrusted tool content and evaluating agent workflows for security and reliability.[2]
