Notable

[edit]

Just a note to anyone who has doubts about the notability of this article just because it was written by User:Marina T., who is known to write a lot of articles about non notable persons: Mati Shemoelof is a notable Israeli essayist. Many of his essays were published in leading Israeli publications.

I am not familiar with his poetry, but he is notable enough just for the reason above. --Amir E. Aharoni (talk) 17:18, 5 February 2008 (UTC)Reply

I would like to request a small update to the Mati Shemoelof article.

The old website, matityaho.com, is no longer my official website. My current official website is:

Could an editor please update the external link(s) to the old website and replace them with the current official website?

Thank you.

Request: Update biography and publications

[edit]

Hello,

I would like to suggest some factual and bibliographical updates to the Mati Shemoelof article, particularly concerning his literary work and publications in Germany since 2013.

I can provide independent sources for the proposed updates.

Thank you.

  • Blixabar, you are welcome to drop secondary sources here on the talk page, with editorial suggestions. Please put a COI declaration on your user page--thanks. Drmies (talk) 17:31, 9 September 2026 (UTC)Reply
    Thank you, Drmies. I have added a COI declaration to my user page.
    As requested, below are some specific factual and bibliographical updates that I would like to suggest for the article. I have included independent secondary sources wherever possible. I am not asking to add promotional material; these are intended as factual updates concerning my literary work and publications in Germany since 2013. I am happy for an editor to determine which of these are appropriate for inclusion.
    === 1. Literary activity in Germany since 2013 ===
    The article currently states that I have lived in Berlin since 2013. It could also reflect the development of my literary work in Germany during this period.
    For example, Deutschlandfunk Kultur profiled my publication of German translations of my poetry in 2020, describing me as a Mizrahi poet in Germany and discussing the publication of Bagdad | Haifa | Berlin. The programme was broadcast on 7 July 2020.

    Stefanie Oswalt, “'Judendichtar' Mati Shemoelof veröffentlicht auf Deutsch”, Deutschlandfunk Kultur, 7 July 2020:
    https://www.deutschlandfunkkultur.de/misrachi-lyriker-in-deutschland-judendichtar-mati-shemoelof-100.html
    The Tagesspiegel also published an interview with me on 1 February 2021, “Ich habe hier die Freiheit gefunden, die ich brauchte”, concerning my life and literary work in Berlin.

    https://www.tagesspiegel.de/gesellschaft/ich-habe-hier-die-freiheit-gefunden-die-ich-brauchte-5736828.html
    === 2. German-language publications ===
    The bibliography could be expanded to include the following German publications:
    • ... reißt die Mauern ein zwischen „uns“ und „ihnen“ (AphorismA Verlag, 2018)
    • Bagdad | Haifa | Berlin: 40 ausgewählte Gedichte (AphorismA Verlag, 2019), translated from Hebrew by Jan Kühne
    • Bleiben oder widerstehen: Wem gehört die deutsche Kultur und andere Texte und Gedichte (AphorismA Verlag, 2020)
    • Das kleine Boot in meiner Hand nenn ich Narbe (Parasitenpresse, 2023), translated from Hebrew by Gundula Schiffer
    • Der Preis (PalmArtPress, 2025)
    There is independent documentation for several of these publications.
    The University of Potsdam, for example, announced a public reading of Das kleine Boot in meiner Hand nenn ich Narbe in July 2023 and identifies it as a German-language publication by the Parasitenpresse, translated from Hebrew by Gundula Schiffer.

    https://www.uni-potsdam.de/de/veranstaltungen/detail/2023-07-05-mati-shemoelof-das-kleine-boot-in-meiner-hand-nenn-ich-narbe
    The book was also reviewed independently by Marion Hinz in KulturPort.de on 31 August 2023. The review discusses the book as my second poetry collection published in German and also notes Bagdad | Haifa | Berlin (2019) as my first German publication.

    === 3. Bagdad | Haifa | Berlin ===
    This book is particularly well documented independently. The Hebrew University of Jerusalem bibliographic database records:
    Mati Shemoelof, Bagdad – Haifa – Berlin: 40 ausgewählte Gedichte, AphorismA Verlag, Berlin, 2019, 89 pages, translated from Hebrew by Jan Kühne.
    Source:
    Hebrew University of Jerusalem:
    https://cris.huji.ac.il/en/publications/bagdad-haifa-berlin-40-ausgewahlte-gedichte/
    It was also reviewed/discussed in Jalta. Positionen zur jüdischen Gegenwart by Jan Kühne in 2020, and covered by Deutschlandfunk Kultur in 2020.
    === 4. Das kleine Boot in meiner Hand nenn ich Narbe ===
    This 2023 poetry collection has received independent coverage.
    Marion Hinz's KulturPort review describes the collection as a book dealing with family history, migration, memory and the experience of living between languages and places, and identifies it as my second poetry collection published in German.
    Source:
    Marion Hinz, KulturPort.de, 31 August 2023:
    https://www.kultur-port.de/kolumne/buch/18602-mati-shemoelof-das-kleine-boot-in-meiner-hand-nenn-ich-narbe.html
    Additional independent coverage includes Peter H. Gogolin in Cultureglobe (14 November 2023), Thorsten Paprotny in Rezensionen.ch (20 August 2023), and Nils Jensen in Buchkultur, issue 212 (2024).
    === 5. Der Preis ===
    The article could also be updated to include the German publication of Der Preis, published by PalmArtPress in Berlin in 2025.
    There is substantial independent coverage of the book.
    Ralph Tharayil wrote about the novel in Berliner Zeitung on 29 April 2025. The article identifies Shemoelof as a writer who writes in Hebrew and German and has lived in Berlin since 2013, and discusses the novel and its fictional “Berliner Preis für hebräische Belletristik”.
    Source:
    Ralph Tharayil, “Der Roman heißt ‘Der Preis’ – und bekommt eine Preisrede”, Berliner Zeitung, 29 April 2025:
    https://www.berliner-zeitung.de/kultur-vergnuegen/literatur/der-roman-von-mati-shemoelof-heisst-der-preis-und-bekommt-eine-preisrede-li.2320443
    The book was also reviewed/recommended by Rouven Hans for the EKZ Bibliotheksservice in 2025.
    === 6. German Literature Fund fellowship ===
    The article currently mentions the 2024 German Literature Fund fellowship. This could be clarified as a work fellowship for developing my first book written in German.
    The Deutscher Literaturfonds officially lists Mati Shemoelof among the authors awarded a Werkstipendium at its February 2024 meeting, for a poetry project.
    Source:
    Deutscher Literaturfonds, “Ergebnisse der Kuratoriumssitzung vom 20./21. Februar 2024”, 19 March 2024:
    https://deutscher-literaturfonds.de/aktuelles/ergebnisse-der-kuratoriumssitzung-vom-20-21-februar-2024/
    === 7. Kulturakademie Tarabya ===
    The article could also mention my 2025 fellowship at the Kulturakademie Tarabya.
    The official Tarabya programme identifies Mati Shemoelof as a 2025 literature fellow and describes his literary work in Berlin, including Bagdad | Haifa | Berlin (2019), Der Preis (2025), and the German-language project Jüdisch Sound, Deutsche Wörter.
    Source:
    Kulturakademie Tarabya, “Mati Shemoelof”, 2025:
    https://kulturakademie-tarabya.de/years/2025/
    === 8. German-language literary work ===
    The combination of the above sources also documents a continuing literary development in Germany: publication of German translations of earlier Hebrew poetry, publication of poetry directly within the German literary scene, the 2024 Deutscher Literaturfonds fellowship for a German-language project, and the publication of Der Preis by a Berlin publisher in 2025.
    I would therefore suggest that the biography could be updated to reflect this development rather than simply listing individual books.
    I am happy to provide any additional bibliographical details or sources if useful, and I leave the final wording and selection of material to the editors. Blixabar (talk) 10:24, 11 September 2026 (UTC)Reply
