Promet Group (stylized as PROMET GROUP) is a Czech family-owned industrial group headquartered in Ostrava. Its businesses range from metal casting and forging to automotive components, tooling and industrial construction. The group includes more than forty companies, mainly in the Czech Republic, Slovakia and Croatia.[1][2]
Tawesco is one of the group's main manufacturing businesses, producing tooling and pressed and welded components. Promet Group also holds, through Promet Tools, a 35% stake in Czech truck manufacturer Tatra Trucks and has an investment in Croatian engineering company Đuro Đaković.[3][4][5]
History
[edit]Promet Group grew out of a metals-trading business founded by René Matera and Radim Cvikl in 1992. Matera had previously worked in the engineering and metallurgical operations of Vítkovice.[6]
Promet moved into manufacturing in 1999 with the purchase of a foundry in Vsetín. Two years later, Promet Group was established as the parent company.[2]
The group bought Tawesco outright in 2011. Based in Kopřivnice, the company had developed from Tatra's tooling and stamping operations.[3]
Promet joined the industrial group that later became Czechoslovak Group in acquiring Tatra Trucks in 2013; its 35% stake is held through Promet Tools.[6][4]
DD Acquisition, jointly owned by Promet Group and CE Industries, took a majority stake in Croatian engineering company Đuro Đaković in 2022.[5]
In the early 2020s, René Matera began transferring management of the family business to the next generation. His daughter Denisa Materová later became chief executive of Promet Group.[6][7][1]
Operations
[edit]The group's businesses are divided between engineering, metallurgy and industrial services. Its manufacturing businesses produce components, tooling, castings and forgings. Other subsidiaries provide construction, electrical engineering and logistics services.[2]
Engineering and automotive
[edit]Tawesco is one of the group's main manufacturing companies. It produces press tools, welding fixtures, stamped and welded components, heavy weldments and assembled parts. It supplies the automotive, agricultural, forestry and material-handling industries.[3]
Tawesco developed from Tatra's tooling operations and became part of Promet Group in 2011. It produces pressed and welded components for customers including Škoda Auto, as well as manufacturers of agricultural, forestry and material-handling equipment.[3][8]
Metallurgy and industrial services
[edit]The group's metallurgical businesses produce iron and steel castings, forgings and machined components. Other companies within the group are active in industrial construction, technological installations, electrical engineering and logistics.[2]
Major holdings
[edit]Tatra Trucks
[edit]Promet owns 35% of Tatra Trucks through its subsidiary Promet Tools, while Czechoslovak Group owns the remaining 65%.[4]
In 2026, STV Invest and Promet Group notified the European Commission of a transaction that would give them joint control of Promet Tools and, indirectly, Tatra Trucks. An initial notification in June was withdrawn in July, and the transaction was notified again on 31 August 2026.[9]
Đuro Đaković
[edit]In 2022, Promet Group and CE Industries invested in Croatian industrial group Đuro Đaković through their jointly owned company DD Acquisition. DD Acquisition became the majority shareholder of the company, whose activities include railway transport, defence, machining and energy.[5]
The investment expanded Promet Group's activities into railway manufacturing. In 2024, Denisa Materová said that production of freight wagons at Đuro Đaković had increased following the investment and that further expansion was planned.[8]
