Sunborn is a Finnish family-owned group whose main areas of activity are hospitality, event production, and real estate development. The group was founded by Ritva and Pekka Niemi.

The group is made up of several distinct companies for its different activities. In Finland, these include Sunborn Saga, which operates the Naantali and Ruissalo spa resorts,[3] and Sunborn Events, which owns the company that operates the Logomo event centre and is a part-owner, with the city of Turku, of the associated event-property company.[4][5]

Outside Finland, the group is present in England and Gibraltar, where the yacht hotels operated by Sunborn International are moored.[6]

History

[edit]

Sunborn began in 1973 as Turun fysikaalinen hoitoasema (Turku Physiotherapy Centre), a practice initially run by Ritva Niemi, a qualified physiotherapist, and Pekka Niemi, who had trained as an economist. The following year, the company launched health-holiday operations in Spain with the tour operator Aurinkomatkat. In 1977, it began rehabilitation operations in Ruissalo, Turku. The same year, Lääkintätekniikka Oy was founded, specialising in the import, sale, and maintenance of equipment and care products used in spa resorts and rehabilitation centres.[3]

In the early 1980s, the Niemis sold their Spanish operations and focused on southwest Finland. In 1981, the company was renamed Kuntoutusyhtymä – Rehab Group Oy. Naantali Spa, built in a Central European style to continue the town's historic spa tradition, opened in November 1984. In 1986, Kuntoutusyhtymä acquired the Ruissalo hotel in Turku from the Rantasipi chain and converted it into Ruissalo Spa. The clientele of both resorts consisted largely of war veterans and disabled veterans, as well as people referred for rehabilitation by the Social Insurance Institution of Finland (Kela).[3]

In 1987, Kuntoutusyhtymä bought the Saga Excelsior business hotel in Düsseldorf.[3]

Sunborn International

[edit]

The group's international operations are managed by Sunborn International (SBI), Sunborn's listed company, which builds and operates yacht hotels and floating real estate. It operates the yacht hotels Sunborn London and Sunborn Gibraltar.

Sunborn International was listed on the Nasdaq First North Growth Market Finland on 29 April 2025. Sunborn International Holding Oy combined with the listed company Rush Factory Oyj, which had been in financial difficulty, through a share exchange structured as a reverse acquisition; as part of the arrangement Rush Factory Oyj was renamed Sunborn International Oyj and Sunborn International Holding Oy became its subsidiary.[7][8]

The Sunborn London yacht hotel in London

The group's yacht-hotel business began with a hotel ship moored off Naantali Spa in 1998.[3] In 2002 the vessel was relocated to London and moored at Royal Victoria Dock in the Docklands, near the ExCeL exhibition centre, where it opened as Sunborn London in 2003.[6]

In 2014 a larger, second-generation vessel — previously operated at Naantali as the Sunborn Princess — replaced the original ship in London and continued as Sunborn London.[9] In the same year a newly built vessel, constructed in Malaysia, entered service at the Ocean Village marina in Gibraltar as the 189-room Sunborn Gibraltar, a seven-deck ship reported to have cost around US$200 million.[9][10]

In April 2026 the City of Vancouver approved a rezoning application for a 250-room floating hotel to be operated by Sunborn in Coal Harbour in partnership with the Vancouver Harbour Flight Centre; the decision was opposed at the public hearing by the hospitality union Unite Here Local 40.[11][12] In 2026 planning permission was granted for a larger replacement vessel for Sunborn London at Royal Victoria Dock.[13]

Events

[edit]

Sunborn's event production is handled by Sunborn Events. In September 2023 it became the catering partner of the Savoy Theatre in Helsinki, taking responsibility for catering and event service and opening a wine and champagne bar on the South Esplanade.[14]

Sunborn Energy

[edit]

Sunborn Energy was founded in 2022 to develop renewable energy technologies for floating structures. Its research and development project, a tidal-energy solution to provide shore power for ships in port, was funded under the fourth round of Innovate UK's Clean Maritime Demonstration Competition (CMDC), part of the UK Department for Transport's UK SHORE programme to reduce shipping emissions.[15]

Other

[edit]

A casino was opened aboard the Sunborn Gibraltar hotel ship in 2015 in partnership with the Åland-based operator Paf.[16] Saga Trade Finland, the group's import and wholesale unit, specialises in professional cosmetics and spa equipment.[17]

Sunborn Events also provides catering and event services at Turku Castle,[18] and the group is involved in the construction of LogoHub, a station and parking centre on Turku's rail yard.[19]
