September 25 _Pt_2.jpg) The derailed train on the tracks There was a disruption of train services on the East–West Line (EWL) of Singapore's Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) system on 25 September 2024. An axle box on a Kawasaki C151 train dislodged, derailing the train (pictured) and damaging the track and equipment between Clementi and Dover stations. More than 2 million commuters were affected, and shuttle train services and bus-bridging services were provided during restoration works. Full services resumed on 1 October. This was the worst breakdown in the MRT network's history. The Land Transport Authority concluded that the failure began with degraded grease in an axle bearing, which led to overheating and fire damage to the chevron springs. The Transport Safety Investigation Bureau found that fixing a "Null ID" error could have identified the affected train and prevented the incident. The rail operator, SMRT, was subsequently fined S$2.4 million (US$1.8 million) and the C151 trains were withdrawn from service by September 2025. (Full article...)

September 25  Kittie The discography of Kittie, a Canadian heavy-metal band, consists of seven studio albums, five extended plays, one compilation album, one demo album, four video albums, eighteen singles and twenty-one music videos. Kittie was formed in 1996 by guitarist and vocalist Morgan Lander, guitarist Fallon Bowman, and drummer Mercedes Lander. The band currently consists of Morgan, Mercedes, guitarist Tara McLeod, and bassist Ivy Vujic. Kittie are estimated to have sold more than one million albums worldwide, primarily in the United States. The band's debut album Spit was released in November 1999 through Ng Records, and reissued through Artemis Records in January 2000. It peaked at number 79 on the US Billboard 200 and was certified gold by the Recording Industry Association of America. September 26 Kevin O'Halloran was an Australian freestyle swimmer who won a gold medal in the 4 × 200 metre freestyle relay at the 1956 Summer Olympics. The first Western Australian to win Olympic gold, O'Halloran learnt to swim in his hometown of Katanning. He moved to Perth to attend secondary school where he became more committed to swimming. Competitive swimming was not well developed in Western Australia: races were held in muddy river pools, so O'Halloran moved to the east coast in late 1955 in an attempt to qualify for the Olympics. His new coach, Frank Guthrie, altered his training regimen; within a year, O'Halloran had reduced his times by approximately 10 percent. He gained Olympic selection in the relay and the 400-metre freestyle. O'Halloran led off the Australian quartet when they obtained a new world record, and placed sixth in the 400 metre. Thereafter, O'Halloran's career was beset by ear problems; he retired in 1958 after failing to qualify for the 1958 British Empire and Commonwealth Games. He died in an accidental shooting in 1976. September 27  Valley Parade, currently known as Mbanq Valley Parade, is an all-seater football stadium in Bradford, West Yorkshire, England. It was built in 1886 as the home of Manningham Rugby Football Club, but in 1903 the club changed code from rugby league to association football, and became Bradford City A.F.C.. In 1908, the architect Archibald Leitch was commissioned to redevelop Valley Parade when Bradford City were promoted to the First Division. Few changes were made until a fatal fire on 11 May 1985 in which 56 supporters were killed and at least 265 were injured. Oliver Popplewell published an inquiry into the fire that led to the introduction of new safety legislation for sports grounds across England. Following the fire, Valley Parade underwent a £2.6-million redevelopment and re-opened in December 1986. It underwent significant changes in the 1990s and the early 2000s, and now has a capacity of 25,136. The attendance record of 39,146 was set in 1911 at an FA Cup tie against Burnley. It features an anime-style open-world environment that uses elemental magic and character-switching. It takes place in the fantasy world of Teyvat, home to seven nations, each of which is tied to a different element. The story follows the Traveler, an interstellar adventurer separated from their sibling, as they travel across Teyvat with their guide Paimon to reunite with the sibling. Along the way, the two make friends with Teyvat's people and resolve conflicts. Regardless of which nation they hail from, individuals with great ambitions may be granted a Vision, a magical gemstone that allows the user to control a specific element. Genshin Impact has received generally positive reviews, with critics praising its combat mechanics and open world, but criticizing its endgame and monetization model. September 28  Female great hornbill Hornbills are birds in the families Bucerotidae (the arboreal hornbills) and Bucorvidae (the ground hornbills). They are found in Africa and Asia. Most hornbills live in tropical and sub-tropical forests, or savannahs. Sixty four species are recognised by the International Ornithologists' Union, though the exact number is disputed due to taxonomic disagreements. The IUCN list two species as critically endangered, six as endangered, seventeen as vulnerable, six as near threatened, and thirty-one as of least concern. The species with the smallest estimated population is the critically endangered Sulu hornbill, estimated to number fewer than fifty mature individuals. The species with the largest estimated population is the vulnerable Palawan hornbill, which numbers up to fifty thousand mature individuals. September 29  Paul McCartney "The Long and Winding Road" is a song by the Beatles from their 1970 album Let It Be. A piano ballad, Paul McCartney (pictured) composed it at his Scotland farm in 1968. He was driven by the Beatles' growing bitterness towards each other. Main recording was done in January 1969 as part of the Get Back album project, but for a while no album resulted. John Lennon and George Harrison later lent the Get Back recordings of January to producer Phil Spector so that he could attempt to assemble an album out of them. For the "Long and Winding Road" recording, he added lavish orchestral and choral overdubs, much to McCartney's chagrin and to the frustration of many music critics, although many others came to their defence. It was released on Let It Be in May 1970, a month after McCartney announced the breakup of the Beatles, and marked the band's twentieth and final song topping the Billboard Hot 100. September 30  Takato Dam, a gravity dam in Japan A dam is a structure that impounds water or restricts its flow. The four types are gravity dams (example pictured), embankment dams, buttress dams, and arch dams. Dams provide irrigation, hydropower, water supply, flood management, recreation, inland navigation, and fish farming. An early dam was the Jawa Dam in modern Jordan, built around 3000 BCE. The process of designing dams transformed in the late 18th century from an informal practice to an engineering discipline. In the 20th century, the widespread availability of concrete led to the creation of many large dams worldwide. Dams may include locks, fish ladders, spillways, and power stations. Dams occasionally fail, resulting in flooding and loss of life. Organized opposition to dam projects emerged in the modern era, focused on environmental and social impacts such as the loss of plant and animal habitats, reduced water and sediment flow, degraded landscape aesthetics, the submergence of cultural sites, and forced relocations of people. September 30  St. Paul's Presbyterian Church, a Category 2 Historic Place The Kaikōura District is a territorial authority of New Zealand located on the eastern coast of the South Island in northern Canterbury. Ten sites in the district have been listed as historic places on the New Zealand Heritage List / Rārangi Kōrero by Heritage New Zealand. The region was historically an important Māori settlement area from the earliest period of inhabitation. European inhabitation began in the 1840s with the establishment of whaling stations. The ten sites include one listed as Category 1 as a "place of special or outstanding historical or cultural significance", one as a Historic Area for containing multiple related sites, and one wāhi tapu as a site of spiritual, traditional, or ritual importance to the Māori communities. October 1 Independence Day is an annual public holiday in Nigeria observed on 1 October to commemorate the country's independence from the United Kingdom. The formal transfer of sovereignty that took place in Lagos in 1960 when the Union Jack was lowered and replaced with Nigeria's green–white–green flag (pictured). Princess Alexandra of Kent, representing Elizabeth II, presented the constitutional instruments of independence, and the new federal government formally assumed authority. Independence Day is a key date in Nigeria's civic calendar: the country's president delivers a national broadcast, and state governments organise parades and cultural programmes. The anniversary has occasionally been marked by national incidents, such as the suspension of festivities following the 1992 Nigerian Air Force C-130 crash and the October 2010 Abuja bombings. They were the third class of German dreadnoughts, and the first to feature turbine engines and superfiring turrets. The five ships were Kaiser, Friedrich der Grosse, Kaiserin, Prinzregent Luitpold, and König Albert. All five ships saw action in the North Sea during war; they served together as VI Division of III Battle Squadron. Four were present during the Battle of Jutland. The ships also took part in Operation Albion in the Baltic Sea; during the operation they were reorganized as IV Battle Squadron, under the command of Vice Admiral Wilhelm Souchon. At the end of the war, all five ships were interned at the British naval base in Scapa Flow. On 21 June 1919, they were scuttled to prevent their seizure by the Royal Navy. October 2  Emperor Yingzong of Ming was captured by the Mongols during the Battle of Tumu. The Battle of Tumu was a battle in Chinese history, fought on 1 September 1449, between the Ming dynasty and the Oirat Mongols. In July 1449, Esen Taishi, leader of the Oirat Mongols, launched a large-scale, three-pronged invasion of China. Emperor Yingzong of Ming (pictured), on the advice of the eunuch Wang Zhen, decided to personally lead an expedition northward to confront Esen, despite protests from experienced generals. The Ming army was ill-prepared and became scattered during its advance. When it reached the Tumu post station, it was in a vulnerable position, trapped in narrow terrain with limited water and supplies. Esen then employed deceptive tactics to lure the Ming forces into an ambush, and Mongol cavalry units quickly surrounded them, cutting off their retreat. Meanwhile, Wang Zhen, who held de facto command, was indecisive and ignored advice from his generals to organize a withdrawal. Esen's troops subsequently overwhelmed and defeated the Ming army, killed tens of thousands of soldiers, and captured the Emperor. (Full list...)
