Clarification of guidance at Wikipedia:WikiProject Sydney/Suburbs#Naming Conventions and Wikipedia:WikiProject Melbourne/Suburbs#Naming Conventions
[edit]In a recent RM discussion at Talk:Model Farms, I indicated that these two wikiprojects had information listed as naming conventions that are not clearly aligned with WP:NCAUST. Andrewa clarified that these are guidelines only and are not backed by the same consensus as NCAUST and should not be considered authoritative. As such, I believe they should be amended to avoid ambiguity and contradicting authoritative policy.

If the name is unique then you can add a redirect, e.g. Bondi Beach, which redirects to the article at Bondi Beach, New South Wales. This is an especially good idea if the suburb is well known internationally and locally
could simply be changed to read The name of a suburb may be used alone if the place is the primary or only topic for that name.

- The Melbourne page is much more confusing and the whole section probably needs to be revised and updated in its entirety to reflect the contemporary interpretation of NCAUST.
As I have been quite involved in last year's RfC's as well as initiating a number of RMs in this topic area recently, I am cautious about making WP:BOLD edits to make these changes myself, at least without an indication of consensus by members of these wikiprojects. I have waited until the RM on Model Farms I recently initiated was closed to avoid any suggestions of impropriety. I am also mindful that in the October 2025 RfC, number of editors described a "long-standing" convention of using placename, state as the default. I suspect these project pages are quite old and may be documentation to support that claim was at some stage the connsensus (notwithstanding that these are not authoritative naming conventions and consensus can change, although the RfCs did not determine either way). In any case, given it is a bit of a hot topic, I think it is best to ensure there are no objections changing these old pages! Dfadden (talk) 11:02, 17 July 2026 (UTC)

help updating contemporary Australian literary entries

I am new to wikipedia, and still learning the ropes. My passion is the history of Australian literature, especially contemporary Australian literature. I notice that a lot of new Australian books are absent from wikipedia, despite meeting the notability criteria. I tried writing an entry last night, but the AI I used to help me code rewrote a lot of the sentences, which I failed to realise before clicking upload (sorry).
I was wondering if more experienced Aus wiki editors would be interested in creating pages for some 'new' Australian books and authors. I feel like they deserve to be represented here! Here is a list of notable absences:
- Max Easton, and his book 'The Magpie Wing' - Michael Winkler's 'Griefdogg' - Patrick Marlborough and their novel 'Nock Loose' - Zarah Butcher-McGunnigle 'Nostalgia Has Ruined My Life' (and her other books) - Miriam Webster 'The Slip'
there are many more, but I'll keep it to these for now!
These are all books and authors cited and profiled in legitimate publications, prizes, and academic journals. I just think it is important to maintain Australia's literary history here. I am sorry, but I do not know how to go about it just yet. Are these the kind of pages that would/should be created, or am I wrong? OzLiterati (talk) 01:09, 21 July 2026 (UTC)

- Hi Bearian. I'm an Aussie WP editor with over 30 years experience in the Australian film and TV industry (director, producer, screenwriter). After seeing your request I've done a bit of research into Lana Golja and on the basis of what I've found I would say that she is a model and aspiring actress with a solid credit when a teenager, a few bit parts since, and a supporting role in a not-yet-released Hallmark romance movie shot in Australia. The coverage of Lana I could find in Australian media is mostly self-generated or promotional, which is not atypical of actors trying to get a foothold in a difficult industry, but not exceptional. She is not a well-known name here, and there seems to be no secondary coverage of her - in the sense of independent reviews, bios, puff pieces etc - at all. On the basis of this I would say that Lana Golja doesn't meet the notability requirements for WP. i.e. "People are presumed notable if they have received significant coverage in multiple published secondary sources that are reliable, intellectually independent of each other, and independent of the subject." Neither does she fill the WP "Creative Professional" criteria for notability. BTW, The Australian Broadcasting Corporation is definitely a reliable source, but the citation to it in the Lana article leads to an archived site for Lana's teenage credit, but has no actual mention of her. Indigenous Australians reliable sources list
[edit]As a follow up to this discussion from a month ago, I wanted to attempt to create a reliable sources list for Indigenous Australians content. Would this be something that could be useful to add to this project? Here is the example I put together. It may have hiccups as I copied the tables from elsewhere: User:Jimmyjrg/sandbox/11
There isn't much discussion on Wikipedia about Indigenous Australians and reliable sources (that I could find quickly), so only one example has links to discussions. Because of this, I added a Description column to give information on how the resource could be useful.
Ideally, sources could include an additional criteria based on the AIATSIS Guide to Evaluating and Selecting Educational Resources 2022 outlining whether they are developed by, with, for, about, or against Indigenous people. This would provide additional context on their reliability to the topic, and could be consulted in conjunction with Wikipedia's own reliability guidelines.
I'm interested to hear any thoughts on this. Feel free to edit the Sandbox in the meantime too User:Jimmyjrg/sandbox/11 or copy it elsewhere to remix, rework etc. Jimmyjrg (talk) 17:26, 23 July 2026 (UTC)
