Template talk:ASN accident

Is there a way to prevent the template from wikilinking to Aviation Safety Network ??

Hello Wikipedians. In some articles the ASN Accident template is used multiple times, and each time it generates a wikilink to Aviation Safety Network. Per MOS:OVERLINKING#Duplicate and repeat links it's usually frowned upon for an article to have multiple wikilinks to the same page, unless they are distant from each other in the article. However, the template is used almost exclusively to provide references, so all those multiple wikilinks get crowded together in the References section, and it just looks off to me (and if an article is going for a GA, A, or FA status I'd expect any overlinking would be noticed during review.) Is there a version of the template that just uses unlinked text instead, or a parameter that disables the wikilink? If not, of course I can just bypass the template and roll-my-own links, but I figured it would be worth asking in case there's some trick I'm not aware of. — Itsfullofstars (talk) 20:21, 19 June 2021 (UTC)

ASN's new URL structure

Wikibase error

Pinging @Wbm1058 - If an unreliable source is added, I would argue that does need action from patrolling editors, as unreliable sources (especially user wikis) shouldn't be getting added anyway Danners430 _{tweaks made} 20:56, 11 July 2026 (UTC)

@Danners430: Sorry for the delay in replying, I got sidetracked into working on another project. I patrol for pages transcluding {{error}}, which I try to keep mostly clear, and your edit to this template spammed that with dozens of pages. I see from your recent discussion about this template that few others besides yourself care about this issue. Frankly, if you aren't willing to fix these yourself, it's likely to take a long time before someone else does it, if ever. If you want others to help, at the least you should update Template:ASN accident/doc to describe how to quickly, easily replace the "unreliable" source with a better source. Thinking about how to solve this from my standpoint, I recalled that others created and used {{error-small}} instead of {{error}}, so rather than {{preview warning}} as I was trying out in Template:ASN accident/sandbox, we could use {{error-small}}, which is a template that falls outside of my patrols. Sorry, my time is oversubscribed, and setting my priorities continues to be a challenge. – wbm1058 (talk) 12:18, 30 July 2026 (UTC)

I think most of the 83 items here have the problem, but creating a maintenance category for these, such as Category:Pages citing the ASN Wikibase, would give you a positive ID of all of them. I can change the template to populate the category, and create the category page for you. – wbm1058 (talk) 12:40, 30 July 2026 (UTC)

OK, I've gone through the instances where the wikibase was being used, and either removed (where there was another source present) or replaced with a citation needed tag (where it was the only source given)... which is what I would have done manually when coming across them "in the wild". Deprecate the wikibase parameter?
