Overall:
this reminds me, I really need to play Undertale sometime. Anyhow, article is neutral, long enough, this was nominated right after it was promoted, and spotchecks check out. No qpq required and no copyvio to be seen. Shame there is no image of him :). Hook-wise, I find ALT0, ALT1, and ALT3 interesting. ALT4 is also interesting, but the navel-gazing concerns are valid and also it doesn’t cite to this article, so possibly disqualifying. If the promoter goes with ALT1, I’d recommend ALT1a: "... that Toby Fox's video game Undertale was given to Pope Francis? (Taking a closer look, I’m not entirely sure ALT1 verifies) 1brianm7 (talk) 05:50, 23 February 2026 (UTC)
- @1brianm7: just to clarify, is alt1 (and alt1a) approved or not? your last sentence indicates some doubt. ltbdl (love) 17:23, 24 February 2026 (UTC)
- Looking again, I'd say they are approved. The Polygon article takes the claim from Matpat into its own voice, so it verifies. 1brianm7 (talk) 18:01, 24 February 2026 (UTC)
Lead image
[edit]Personally I’m not sure if it is the right choice to use the image of Fox that has been added to the infobox. Per MOS:LEADIMAGE they are supposed to be the type of image used for similar purposes in high-quality reference works, and therefore what our readers will expect to see
and not having a lead image may be the best solution if there is no easy representation of the topic
. I’m not convinced it fits that criteria as
1. it is very low quality
2. it is quite old
3. given the precedent on articles such as Yoko Taro and Daft Punk I’m not sure if including Fox’s actual face is the right choice in this scenario, in terms of meeting the expectations of readers and representing the topic of the article.
Notifying @1timeuse75 as they added said image. Mir Novov (contribs | talk) 10:23, 27 June 2026 (UTC)
- I can see the argument for 3. For 1 and 2 however, if this is the only available image there's not much that can be done. Many articles have much worse and older photos because it is the only one available (see e.g. Aphex Twin). Skyshiftertalk 15:32, 27 June 2026 (UTC)
- I agree with Skyshifter more. Reminder that good articles are required to have an image as per WP:GACR6. 1timeuse75 (talk) 16:32, 27 June 2026 (UTC)
- Said image is not required to be in the lead though (I was envisioning it remaining further down). Mir Novov (contribs | talk) 16:36, 27 June 2026 (UTC)
- @Mir Novov what do you mean by this? The first line of MOS:LEADIMAGE is "It is common for an article's lead or infobox to carry a representative image—such as of a person or place, a book or album cover—to give readers visual confirmation that they've arrived at the right page." 1timeuse75 (talk) 10:01, 28 June 2026 (UTC)
- I meant retain the image further down and leave the infobox empty. However, consensus seems to be to retain the image so I’m happy to drop this. Mir Novov (contribs | talk) 11:32, 28 June 2026 (UTC)

- It's not required to have an image if it's impossible to get a free one. That's why it says "if possible". PARAKANYAA (talk) 07:26, 9 July 2026 (UTC)

- Daft Punk is not really relevant here as they were deliberately performing an act as two robots. But if you look at member Thomas's article you will find a photo of his actual face (there are no free photos of Guy-Man unmasked currently so thats why a costumed photo is used). ―Howard • 🌽33 10:07, 28 June 2026 (UTC)
- I’d disagree - post-Undertale Fox has adopted the dog as his way of representing himself in public, see . He has pretty much no photos of his actual appearance, and this seems to be an intentional decision. Sure it’s a bit more tongue in cheek but I’d say the situation is comparable; Thomas Bangaiter represents himself using his real face outside of Daft Punk so it’s not the same IMO. Mir Novov (contribs | talk) 11:29, 28 June 2026 (UTC)
- The current article is about Toby Fox the person, not only Fox as he presents himself as a character, so a real photo of him is currently acceptable for use (cf. Videogamedunkey). So far as I know, if Fox was against displaying photos of him he would have said so. If Fox explicitly objects to the current photo of the article, I will be ok with removing it as a courtesy (eg. as is done with other living people such as CGP Grey or Jaiden Animations who have free photos of them but have requested the photos not be displayed on their article.) ―Howard • 🌽33 11:51, 28 June 2026 (UTC)
- I’d argue that how someone publicly presents themselves should be taken into account with the lead image, again cf. Yoko Taro. But the discussion is moot anyway as there are no appropriately licensed photos of Fox in his canine visage AFAIK. Mir Novov (contribs | talk) 12:01, 28 June 2026 (UTC)

- I think it's quite inappropriate to dig up a 16-year old video recorded on a spy pen to represent a public figure who prefers not to make his face available. We should use the same type of imagery that reliable sources and other tertiary sources use to represent the subject. I prefer this image be removed, at least. ~Maplestrip/Mable (chat) 11:39, 5 July 2026 (UTC)
- Wasn't aware that was the origin. I concur. Mir Novov (contribs | talk) 12:06, 5 July 2026 (UTC)
- I'm sorry but I just don't think your logic applies here. Wikipedia is an encyclopedia, and it's very well established that biographies of living people benefit from representative photos or images of the subject. The video where the image is from is very old, yes, but Toby is clearly aware that he's being filmed if you watch it (go watch it, the recorder states to him directly that he's being recorded), it's not some secret paparazzi film.
- I think debating the image in the context of what's most representative of his lead image in the infobox is fine and worthy (I would lean towards this, but the dog is fine too). But point blank I think this image should be somewhere in the article, readers benefit from knowing what he looks like and there's a lot of images online if viewers are curious, just most aren't in the public domain/creative commons. Yojo98 (talk) 16:32, 5 July 2026 (UTC)
- I'd like to amend this after reading the insightful comment by Howard. If Fox specifically states that he's against the use of photos of him on Wikipedia or this specific video / photo, I would support removing it. However, absent of that I think its use in the article is appropriate. Yojo98 (talk) 17:35, 5 July 2026 (UTC)
- Googling around, there are actually a ton of pictures floating around of him, including good-looking modern pictures. I withdraw my complaint, I guess it's fine until we see him ask for its removal. ~Maplestrip/Mable (chat) 18:45, 5 July 2026 (UTC)

- Quite late but just read this now; a 2016 image was released so listed issues 1&2 has been solved. Do you still worry about Issue 3?
- In my opinion it is no big deal, but I may be biased as I was the one that contacted the copyright holder to release rights. TheSilksongPikmin (talk | contribs) 03:11, 15 July 2026 (UTC)

In the section about DELTARUNE, Toby has never explicitly stated that there will be seven chapters to the game. There are boot-up sprites in the game files for Chapters 8, 9, 10, and 0. He always refers to the chapters past chapter 5 as "future chapters" which is an odd wording instead of just saying "chapters 6 and 7". I'd assume that there are going to be seven chapters to the game, but Toby has never explicitly confirmed it. Lachlan5150 (talk) 07:33, 8 July 2026 (UTC)
- According to "Fox says there will be seven chapters in total". Sure, he could pull a trick on us but I feel seven chapters is a good enough assumption to state directly. Mir Novov (contribs | talk) 10:08, 8 July 2026 (UTC)
- I agree with Mir Novov. If a WP:RS said something like you're arguing, like "fans speculate there may be up to 10 chapters" then we could include that too. But a quick google didn't yield anything outside of reddit threads (which won't work here) Yojo98 (talk) 13:09, 8 July 2026 (UTC)
Not done for now: please establish a consensus for this alteration before posting an edit request. meamemg (talk) 14:00, 8 July 2026 (UTC)- I feel "THE HALFWAY MARK HAS BEEN ATTAINED" at the end of Chapter 4 kinda makes it obvious there are going to be 7 chapters Andorid1738 (talk) 01:39, 26 July 2026 (UTC)

I am pretty sure Fox asked for the image of him covered in soap with swimming trunks on to be used. ~2026-30346-08 (talk) 15:58, 19 July 2026 (UTC)

- Basically, yes, he did, but 1. it was a joke and 2. it is really not representative of what he actually looks like, and is therefore not useful for an image in a Wikipedia article. 🫀 Crash // Organhaver ( it / he | talk to me, maybe? ) 18:10, 19 July 2026 (UTC)

Inclusion of voice clip?
[edit]I don't really see the need of including voice of Toby Fox in the article. It's very low quality from 2010, he rarely speaks out in public or even online now, and I don't see its usefulness in a game developer's biography. ~2026-40786-93 (talk) 07:48, 21 July 2026 (UTC)
- Voice is common for WP:BLP articles. It is low-quality but better than nothing. TheSilksongPikmin (talk | contribs) 22:47, 22 July 2026 (UTC)
