Request to add a nickname and AP Male Athlete of the Year

Hello,

1. The Unicorn

Could someone add "The Unicorn" as one of Shohei Ohtani's nickname ?

Current text : "Nicknamed "Shotime", he has previously played in MLB for the Los Angeles Angels and in Nippon Professional Baseball (NPB) for the Hokkaido Nippon-Ham Fighters."

Proposed change : "Nicknamed "Shotime" and "The Unicorn", he has previously played in MLB for the Los Angeles Angels and in Nippon Professional Baseball (NPB) for the Hokkaido Nippon-Ham Fighters."

2. AP Male Athlete of the Year

Could you also add "4× AP Male Athlete of the Year (2021, 2023-2025)" in his career highlights and awards ?

 Not done: His AP Male Athlete of the Year awards are already listed in the "Honors" subsection (under the heading "Media"). As for adding "The Unicorn" as a nickname, I don't think there's enough evidence to show that this is actually a nickname that's in common use. Sportskeeda isn't a reliable source, and the Fox Sports article only quotes a single person as saying that they think he's nicknamed "the unicorn". There's even merch from MLB and NewBalance qualifying him as "Unicorn". In many of Ohtani's MLB highlights the unicorn emoji is used. MLB youtube account using "Baseball's 🦄" as one of their short title. Many users on twitter and reddit threads using it. Is that not enough ?

If anything I feel like it's more commonly used than "Shotime".

None of those are reliable sources except for Sports Illustrated, and again, there's a difference between describing him as or comparing him to a unicorn and using it as a nickname. Day Creature (talk) 00:32, 24 May 2026 (UTC)

Sports Illustrated has gone way downhill since it was taken over by private equity. I agree that "Unicorn" is not a nickname. – Muboshgu (talk) 01:02, 24 May 2026 (UTC)
