Three Martyrs of Chimbote

I'm really surprised that there was no mention of the Three Martyrs of Chimbote. Their brutal murders by the Shining Path, funded by Libya, lead to massive resurgence of Catholic faith, popular resentment against the terrorists, and the missionary's beatification, and arguably, the communists' downfall, the election of Pope Leo XIV and the Killing of Muammar Gaddafi. Black Book of Communism is not an appropriate source

I see that source/reference 107 is the BBoC. I'm not sure if this is already Wikipedia consensus, but it's not a valid source. The historiography has been wholly discredited since its publication. It is not something you can use as a reference if Wikipedia is to be serious.

I'd encourage someone to change the reference if the event cited happened. If not, I'll just delete the sentence until someone can re-add it. I'm not saying anything about the event, just that we can't use the BBoC as evidence for it, and if that's the only place the claim exists then it's not reliable enough to be on Wikipedia.

I'll give a couple of days for this to be changed before I delete it, as I'd rather not delete it if it did actually happen and is present in proper sources.

Hi everyone!

Hello to all the editors of this article. I wrote a college essay that I adapted into a Wikipedia article on this same topic (you can view it at Draft:Shining Path)-better written and more neutral in its historical details. I've tried to add some information from the draft to the article; some things:

- I really don't like that the article disproportionately focuses on the history of the organization after Guzmán's capture. But I'd like to reach a consensus on how to proceed. Maybe deletion is needed?

- I’ve removed the inappropriate section on “In popular culture.” Although it’s fun to read about Guns N’ Roses and other works, I think these references should be avoided, and the focus should be on Maoism and Marxist ideology.

- The “Structure” section is written in a somewhat disorganized way (with bullet points and a table); I was thinking of removing it, but I’d like to hear your opinions.

- I haven’t changed the lead yet because I’d have to finish the main body and have a final version before writing a new, proper one in accordance with official policy.

@SilentHalo: Deletion has a specific meaning on Wikipedia, which is the deletion of pages. I think what you meant in your first point is removing content, which you also have to justify, especially if it is large-scale and involves sourced content. Yue🌙 (talk) 03:51, 6 July 2026 (UTC)

Thanks, @Yue! Yes, you're totally right—I meant removing or condensing content, not deleting actual pages! Still learning the proper terminology around here. I've reverted. While I agree the table doesn't look great, I frankly don't think it's particularly helpful to delete over 30,000 characters of well-sourced encyclopedic material so that you can supplant your college essay on top of this article. I'm sure the article can be improved, but I don't think that's the way to do it. Descendall (talk) 23:51, 9 July 2026 (UTC)

Hi @Descendall! Thank you for the feedback. I completely understand why you reverted it. I think I misinterpreted the advice from the AfC reviewer who told me I was "at liberty to go through the existing article and amend what is there now." I definitely took the "Be Bold" rule way too literally! Sorry for coming in like a bull in a china shop.

You make a great point about not just supplanting existing sourced material. Instead of trying to do a massive overhaul, would it be alright if I just gradually weave some of the heavy academic sources from my research (like Steve Stern, Carlos Iván Degregori, and the TRC report) into the current text over the next few weeks to help flesh out the history sections?

I really just want to help improve the academic sourcing of the article. Let me know if a slower, paragraph-by-paragraph approach works better for you guys! Best, SilentHalo (talk) 13:48, 10 July 2026 (UTC)
