Trimming

Hey everyone! The page is now 12,465 words, which is pretty long. Wikipedia guidelines state that articles above 9,000 words "Probably should be divided or trimmed". I did some major trimming of this page a couple years ago, getting it from 19,000 words to around 13,000. Clearly, it's way better than it was, but I think we could trim another 1,000–2,000 words. I'll start reviewing the page and I'll start with very light trimming while awaiting input from others. OrdinaryOtter (talk) 11:48, 26 January 2026 (UTC)

Update: According to the section size calculator on this talk page, the article is now around 11,500 words. I'm removing the maintenance tag, but I would encourage other editors to continue trimming where possible, since the article is still quite long. Many of Williams' individual seasons have their own pages, so it may be easy to do some additional trimming of the Professional career section. OrdinaryOtter (talk) 01:41, 25 February 2026 (UTC)

Year-end championship?

I removed this segment from the page because it is not clear:

"Williams failed to qualify for the year-end championship for the first time since 1998..."

Does anybody know which tournament is being referred to as "the year-end championship"? I read through the cited source and could not figure it out. OrdinaryOtter (talk) 09:52, 30 January 2026 (UTC)

The WTA Finals and Year-end Championships are the same thing. I can't see the cited source since i don't pay for the NY Times. Fyunck(click) (talk) 10:23, 30 January 2026 (UTC)

Thanks for the reply. I changed "year-end championship" to "WTA Finals" for clarity. I would invite you to consider that not everyone has knowledge about professional tennis, and for those readers the segment could be unclear. @OrdinaryOtter: It was not meant to be dismissive. WTA Finals I guess is fine however you should be aware that in the time period in question that's not what they were called. They are all WTA Year-end championships but only 11 have been titled WTA Finals. Perhaps it would have been better to simply link it to WTA Finals and add WTA at the front?
