Major League Criminals
[edit]Since the National Football League has given us the source material for so many films about former players in prison such as the various versions of The Longest Yard and baseball has had its own list of cheats, criminals and conflicts, perhaps it is time Baseball Reference and Wikipedia pages linked Pete Rose and the other great felons of the game. 2001:1970:4F67:B800:421A:648:EC33:8C49 (talk) 22:49, 20 May 2025 (UTC)
Hall of fame reinstatement
[edit]- Note: I posted this earlier and someone reverted it with an apparent concern about the source. I would say the reliability of the source is not for any one person to decide, so I'd ask that it not be reverted again. In any case, it's a perfectly legitimate thing to evaluate on a talk page, instead of reverting 2601:644:8581:75B0:76FA:C1BF:94F4:EDF3 (talk) 02:04, 21 May 2025 (UTC)
This article claims that Rose's HoF eligibility reinstatement was at the behest of Donald Trump. I'll leave it to others here to decide whether to use it. 2601:644:8581:75B0:76FA:C1BF:94F4:EDF3 (talk) 22:03, 20 May 2025 (UTC)
- Not a reliable source. Also that is an opinion piece so stating it as a fact is improper. Spanneraol (talk) 22:11, 20 May 2025 (UTC)
- Thanks for not re-reverting. I looked into the source and it seems ok to me (see article The American Prospect). Also, we're supposed to include opinions (relevant sourced viewpoints) in articles, rather than just raw facts, as long as we don't mix them up.
At this point I'm supportive of including the link. The author Peter Dreier is a left wing political type, who happens to have written extensively about baseball topics (see publication list, search for "baseball"), if that matters. So I won't call him unbiased, but rather, as someone with a viewpoint that we can cite. Obviously if there's a comparable source saying the opposite of Dreier, that should be included too. 2601:644:8581:75B0:76FA:C1BF:94F4:EDF3 (talk) 02:48, 21 May 2025 (UTC)
- I didn't revert it in the first place, that was someone else. You can't cite it as fact... "Rose was reinstated because of Trump" you'd have to say Dreier made the claim... still not sure if it's relevant though unless the commissioner makes a comment on it one way or another. I agree, I wouldn't claim it as a fact either. How does the following sound? I'd add:
- Left-wing author Peter Dreier has argued that Manfred's reversal was due to political pressure from US President Donald Trump.[citation] Dreier theorizes that Manfred acquiesced to Trump after threats against MLB's DEI program and its exemption from United States antitrust law.
to the paragraph about Rose's HoF eligibility reinstatement. I've re-read the Dreier article and a lot of it is anti-Trump ranting which I'm inclined to ignore. The main claim about Pete Rose's reinstatement is interesting and imho plausible though. So it seems worth citing. 2601:644:8581:75B0:76FA:C1BF:94F4:EDF3 (talk) 03:46, 21 May 2025 (UTC)
- It's still of questionable notability for this article... just some guy's opinion. Spanneraol (talk) 01:50, 3 June 2025 (UTC)
