Length of Oarfish

[edit]

For some reason, there are articles in social media making rounds on Oarfish. One thing that is mentioned is the length of up to 17 meters. The primary source is the first article that is linked, currently as 3, and it certainly does not support 17 meters, and it also calls into question 11 meters. It seems to be a good reference, so I suggest that the numbers are reviewed and edited. ~2025-32244-64 (talk) 17:21, 10 November 2025 (UTC)Reply

If you look at the photograph in 'Description' you will see that 14 men side by side are holding up the oarfish specimen, and we may not have the whole of the tail in the image, either. That says that a length of 11 metres in this case is about right, i.e. the sources are not crazy to give that measurement. Source [3] says 8 metres. Source [10] supports the 17 metres claim, which we already say is tentative. I'll move the 11 and 17 metre claims to a footnote. Chiswick Chap (talk) 19:50, 10 November 2025 (UTC)Reply
