Rename of Sardar Patel Stadium to Narendra Modi Stadium

The stadium was renamed in 2021 and renovated in 2015. The content of Sardar Patel Stadium should be merge with Narendra Modi Stadium. The Sardar Patel Stadium was not demolished it was renamed. Goodknowme (talk) 12:36, 22 June 2025 (UTC)

Stadium Capacity Incorrect

The stadium seated capacity is 110,000, as confirmed by the architects. The 132,000 figure has been inaccurately reported (many articles have taken this number from wikipedia, wikipedia then references the article, and so on). Concerts can attract a larger attendance (such as the Coldplay concert achieving 111,000 spectators) but this does not change the seated capacity for cricket, which is 110,000. See other stadiums - for example MetLife Stadium capacity is correctly labelled as 82,500 even though the record attendance is higher. All stadium on Wikipedia should be listed with total seated capacity- this stadium seems to be the only exception.

Any attempt to fix this information is immediately reversed buy other users. Moderators should fix and lock this.

I agree. The actual capacity is 110,000. This figure is cited in many credible sources, including the company that built the stadium (cited above). I would also like to add another source:

During the 2023 Cricket World Cup final, the stadium was more or less full, as shown in many photos and videos. The official attendance for that match was 92,453 (https://www.foxsports.com.au/cricket/icc-world-cup/cricket-world-cup-2023-india-vs-australia-scores-live-blog-updates-stats-video-stream-result-news-blog-highlights/news-story/f0d7682e014edbaeaf92b06b9096afcb). If the actual capacity of the stadium were indeed 132,000, that would mean nearly 40,000 seats were empty, which is clearly implausible.

Is the number perhaps from seating and standing (so an added 30,000 people could hypothetically stand) although I don’t think an unofficial standing number would work though and whatever is cited should be used. Two things.

1. The BCCI say the capacity is 132,000. Why is that not a reliable source?
2. Yes, the architect's website does say 110,00 at the top but read through the rest of the page and they also say it will accommodate 132,000 deliberately designed with a round, open shape that gives every one of the 132,000 seats uninterrupted sightlines. I've no idea why they are quoting two different figures but they are.

I have a feeling that 110,000 is the seated capacity (for sport events) and 132,000 is a number for special events (concerts, presidental visits etc.) with a main stage on one side of the stadium, where people can be seated or standing on the field. ~2026-12769-64 (talk) 14:27, 26 February 2026 (UTC)

You might have seen that our website has different figures https://populous.com/showcases/narendra-modi-stadium.  This is because like many venues the stadium has a fixed seating capacity of 110,000 but in different modes this can be increased with other seating to 132,000.

So 22,000 extra seats can be used (probably like what @~2026-12769-64 said), probably on the field itself, or added chairs elsewhere. So full capacity can be up to 132,000 and therefore both should be used, with their relevant information added, so for example

The stadium can hold a maximum of 132,000 people by converting some of the field into seating areas, whilst 110,000 can be held without the conversion and for sporting events where the whole field is needed (you get the gist).
