New studies have highlighted a counter narrative that matachines in the Americas is a European import, suggesting there is proven continuity for a similair or parallel dance that evolved in Northern Mexico/SW USA. I have began a draft with extensive scholarly referencing highlighting this, although I am proposing it be a seperate page than this one, as there may very well be dances in the Americas that explicitly are Spanish imports.
