The source is used to support the statement Luttrell enlisted in the U.S. Navy in March 1999. That's acceptable per WP:ABOUTSELF. – ².O.^Boxing 08:23, 3 June 2023 (UTC)

Operation Red Wings controversy

The "Operation Red Wings controversy" has some extraordinary claims which are supported by only two sources: a purported Newsweek link that's now gone 404 (and maybe never existed: although, to be fair, there's an article also at Newsweek under a different link which says many of the same things), and one on Slate which only gives limited corroboration to the claims.

Some of these claims have some basis in the evidentiary record: for instance, Newsweek claims Luttrell was found with eleven magazines of ammunition, as the "Operation Red Wings controversy" section states. But other claims, like that Luttrell survived by hiding under a rock for the entire engagement, are not supported by any source cited.

Someone should look into this and clean it up. Accusing a sailor of cowardice in the face of the enemy is no small insult. Wikipedia must not publish such things without supporting evidence.

RM Schniederman, formerly of Newsweek, and Ed Darack, mentioned in linked articles as critical of the "Lone Survivor" version of the story, have new reporting in Politico based on sources and documents that those with more familiarity/patience with the details of the controversy should find informative. Dasy

Both sources for DASY are now 404. I don't know the rules of Wikipedia, and wish to do no harm, but given the recent politico report outlining probable fabrications, should we move the whole DASY article to the talk? Again, no disrespect intended. ~2026-30581-64 (talk) 02:14, 22 May 2026 (UTC)
